WARNING!! REMOVE BARB FIRST BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS AT HOME! WHEN
KEEPING RAYS, PIN THE END OF THE TAIL DOWN WITH A HEAVY OBJECT AND
CUT THE TAIL OFF ABOVE THE BARB. .IF IN DOUBT, CUT THE LINE AND RELEASE THE STINGRAY. BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY!
"Hardhead" reported that he fixed stingray and could only get the dogs to eat it. Another angler and part time Texan, Steve Wright, said he ate one and it was delicious. It was a southern sting ray. Here is what Capt. Charlie Newton had to say "Cownose rays(cownose pictured above) and Stingrays do have a different flavor, we prefer Southern ray, which is just a plain stingray. Over 30 pounds you get fairly good return of meat, but the smaller ones are more tender and I think better.
I usually cut really thin and batter in 3/4 cornmeal and 1/4 flour with McCormick seafood seasoning mixed in. Dip fillet into water and immediately into above mixture then into hot grease."Bon Apetit!
