|
|
| Quote: | The White House is vowing more enforcement of gun laws. But it is not pursuing a promise Obama made as a candidate: a ban on assault-style weapons.
That ban on military-style guns became law during the Clinton administration in 1994 but expired under the Bush administration in 2004. When Attorney General Eric Holder raised the idea of reinstating the ban this year, opposition from political persuasion that shall not be mentioned and Republicans emerged quickly.
Reopening the debate on gun rights is apparently a fight the White House does not want to take on right now. |
I found this while reading a news article online. We may have fended off the surge for an assault rifle ban FOR NOW. _________________

| I think they are finally realizing that stricter national gun laws is political suicide. Look how many Congressmen lost their seats after the 94 ban passed. However don't be lulled into a false sense of security. They might not do it all at once, but it would be easier for them to do it a little at a time. |

As far as I know the empty ammo shelves is only because the manufacturers can't keep up. As soon as a store gets ammo in stock, a few people come along a buy them out. It's the same story for online sales as well. Unless I missed something, we are our own worst enemy when it comes to finding available ammo. |

Could someone please tell me why any law abiding citizen would want or need an assault rifle? Surely, no one uses them for hunting or even for target practice.
As I understand it, our policemen would like to see a ban on assault rifles because they are being shot at by criminals using them, and the assault rifles are used by the crazies who shoot up the schools, workplaces, and day care centers. |

The criminals and crazies will always be able to get their hands on whatever gun they want whether they are banned or not. |

My wife has one and we use it for hunting and target practice. Don't forget that assault does not mean it is a machine gun. It is simply a sexy black semiautomatic rifle. You have to pull the trigger every time you shoot. Her's has an 18 inch bull barrel and is very fun to shoot target practice using it.
They can still go in there with a six shooter, knife or sword or pack a van with fertilizer and blow it up if they are really intent on killing people. There was a guy who killed six Japanese policemen with a knife.
Here is Kelle's Gun

Here is an example of "if they want it, they can get it".
Mexico police find machine gun, grenade in drug cartel's arsenal
12:00 AM CDT on Wednesday, April 15, 2009
E. Eduardo Castillo, The Associated Press
MEXICO CITY – A woman was arrested guarding an arsenal that included an anti-aircraft machine gun – the first weapon of its kind seized in Mexico, police said Tuesday.
The arsenal belonged to a group linked to the Beltran Leyva drug cartel, federal police coordinator Rodolfo Cruz said. It also included ammunition, five rifles, a grenade and part of a grenade launcher.
Mexican drug cartels' higher-powered weapons, even military-grade arms such as grenades and machine guns, have left police grossly outgunned.
Cruz said the confiscated .50-caliber anti-aircraft machine gun can fire 800 rounds per minute and is capable of penetrating armor from more than 5,000 feet. Police on a routine patrol Monday found the gun fitted atop an SUV at a house in northern Sonora state. |

That's exactly what's happening. No one is making/shipping any less ammo. Just a few people buying crap loads of ammo. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

OK, I was wrong. Some law abiding citizens do use the guns for target practice and hunting. [I also had thought an assault gun was automatic rather than semi-automatic]. I'm not naive enough to think making something illegal will prevent people from getting their hands on something....look at drugs and at the failure of Prohibition. Hey, maybe we should legalize drugs and tax them like tobacco and alcohol. Might help put a dent in the national debt.
I wonder if the ammo shortage is partly being caused by the drug cartel wars in Mexico? With all the shooting going on down there and along the border, they must be burning through ammo at a rapid clip. |
