| I usually stay within the first couple of miles because I have a Honda CRV and dont want to get into a jam with the sand. What are the differences when you go further down the beach? |

that's a loaded question....the short answer: sometimes...
while there can be more structure down the beach, sometimes the fish are on the north end....fish swim and move around, come to find out...
for example, last weekend some of us were at the jetty...while the water was pretty, fishing was slow...I fished my way off the beach, hitting the 50's, 40's etc.. all the way off...finally ran into Nick in the teens, and he had gotten a few fish, and I got a few as well...
then, on Monday, I see reports that the pomp were around Bob Haul in good numbers, and that's where they've been most of the week
farther south doesn't automatically equal more fish....

| Thnaks Becky that helps alot. I have never driven down there so I didn't have any clue what it is like. What type of structure is down there? Are there like points and things? I always hear shark only fisherman talking about big shell. |

I would go with someone with experience the first time...
| gkrane wrote: | | What type of structure is down there? Are there like points and things? . |
yes, exactly...however, the same structure can be found north of fish pass jetties too, don't forget about that stretch

Big Shell is GONE....wiped off the map these days...

many of us think that the converging nearshore currents have changed their patterns....it's been interesting for sure to watch the changes over the past 10 years or so...

| Some of my best days surf fishing have been north of the fish pass jetties. I have also been skunked more than a few times down PINS. Becky speaks true. |

I wouldn't say the fishing is better...but I would feel confident saying the fish are bigger though and the chances of catching bigger fish are better due to deeper guts, and more pronounced washouts in the bars. Hugely depends on what you are fishing for though...if you want reds and specks...I personally wouldn't bother driving past the teens but that's just my opinion.

Becky speaks the truth! Sometimes all the bait or clean water will be south but sometimes it is dirty all the way or only clean on the north end. You don't know unless you have great intel or just go down and find out! _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

| USACE has not dredged Mansfield Channel since 2009. Prior to that it was dredged every two to three years with sediment being placed on the beach north of the jetties. This has caused rapid erosion of the island south of the 45mm and has changed deposition at Big Shell. The park is working with USACE and Port Mansfield to get dredging resumed. Look on Google earth and you can see the sediment piled up against the South jetty. Sediment carried North by the Yucatan current is pushed out into the Gulf as tides fall or sucked into the channel as the tide rises. Nothing makes it past the jetties and the North jetty will soon be under cut. |

The EPA auctioned off all the dredging equipment. (They did the same along the Rio Grande.) |

YAY!!!!!!! great news!!!!!!
| HardScience wrote: | | Nothing makes it past the jetties and the North jetty will soon be under cut. |
that is 100% true, and there will be costly damage unless dredging or bypass pumping occurs soon...please let us know if we can help by writing letters, etc....
