Checking the vines this weekend and 'lo and behold, I got flower clusters all over the place! 3rd year they have been in the ground, and finally they are doing something. Now, if I can manage to keep the cutter ants from stripping them, I just might have a "Grape Report" to file later in the summer. Razz

Yo CS, if you happen to be a fan of the Petite Syrah, catch me at the fields and I can turn you on to a grape that will make you smile....at a fraction of the price. Very Happy

Or, PM me. Limited time offer.

UPDATE.

Flowers have all pretty much bloomed (who knew that grape "flowers" were so - ehhhh!!!! Nothing much but fuzz, really Surprised ), and now the fruits are beginning to set. So, keeping a steady watering regiment, and hopefully, we will have something to report back on, later in the summer.

On a side note, I am having the most productive tomato season I can ever remember!!! Cool Vines are HEAVY loaded with sets, and the night temps are still low enough that new flowers are setting fruit into May!! Life is good.

What brand of tomato food do you use?

Also, CS:

If you don't mind my asking (and particularly your answering), what is your fertilization schedule when dealing with root knot nematodes? You mentioned heavy fertilization in a previous post. My tomato plants are doing well, but I have been fertilizing about twice as much as usual. Soil tests show I am getting pretty high in phosphorous, but I still have trouble keeping the nitrogen where it needs to be with specific tomato fertilizers like tomatone. I've switched to fish emulsion (5-1-1) to keep the P down. I mulch and compost like crazy, but that approach here on the island in raised beds over sand just doesn't seem to get it done.

As far as the brand of tomato food, nothing special other than Miracle Grow!

I usually hit them (and everything else in the yard) once a month or so, but go to 2/3 times a month when the tomatoes are really starting to set.

More than the fertilizer, I think it's the organic material that helps the most. I don't really amend the existing soil, but rather replenish each bed with 95% compost/5% perlite mix. That and I have a automatic timer set to the soaker hose and it runs for 20 minutes or so every day. I'm here in the Bluff, and digging down in the yard more than a few inches reveals about as much sand as the Island! Just keep composting and adding it to the existing beds.

Picked a 1/2 dozen or so tomatoes this weekend, and they were excellent!

Great info. Thanks.

And as for sand in the Bluff, yes. I found I do the exact opposite that I did when living on the main land. Added sand to clay when evening the lawn. Now I add clay (or mixture thereof) to sand.

Thanks for the response CS. On a related note, I finally have some tomatoes that are starting to blush. First BLT of the season isn't far away!
