|
|
My dad taught me to dislike black drum, so I never wanted to catch them. Well I just ate a small 17" black drum for the first time and i thought it was really good to eat. I have never targeted black drum, so for the first time in a long time I feel a challenge. I know how to catch reds, trout, and flounder, but not drum.
is it alright, if yall give me some pointers on where to target black drum? I don't want big ones, cause I want to eat them.
Do I go to rockport and just pick a reef to sit on and catch them on dead shrimp? I'd like to catch my 5 fairly quickly. Or should I sit in a canal on padre and catch them their?
any help would be appreciated, I do have a boat and would be willing to take someone who thinks they have the best strategy. drum are really good to eat., the small ones at least.
PM me if you want. |

| I KNOW A SPOT IN THE SUMMER TIME WHERE YOU GET TIRED OF CATCHING THE STUPID FISH. THIS TIME OF YEAR WOULD HAVE TO BE NEXT TO A REEF. A GOOD TECH. IS TO PEEL YOUR DEAD SHRIMP TO THE TAIL. THAT GETS MORE SCENT IN THE WATER THAT SO THE DRUM CAN FIND IT. |

I've sight casted to them in the canal with lures. Tried a bunch of things, they wouldn't take take anything. Throw a shrimp in and voila.
I think they are better eating, but close to, redfish. Personally I like drum the best for halfshell or frying. For their size, you sure don't get a lot of meat off them though.
There was an article in one of mags a while back, citing that drum are the most underfished species in our waters. _________________ Jeff

I have been limiting everyday on those little keeper drum since the first rainy front a few weeks ago in the back of copano bay and port bay. Lot of reds in port bay too. Live shrimp threaded on a 2/0 hook or peeled fresh dead. NO ripe bait it just stinks and you'll catch hardheads and gafftop. Make long casts into the deep holes where the water is warmer early in the day then move shallow when the sun warms it in the afternoon. they are spooky make long casts with 2oz or less. If you cant find a place to fish from shore just look for the crowds near the bridges. Copano pier north side has been producing lots of keeper drum at night at the 10th 11th and 12th lights with the high tides when the tides drop 5th 6th and 7th will be better. OK im done writin this fishin book ! |

3" shrimp new penny gulp on 1/8 oz jig head. Kates hole/Deadmans Hole/Shamrock/Boathole. Somedays the reds are feeding with them at the bottom. Good eating fried. _________________ Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. |

I was doing ok on them in the Port Bay area last Wednesday also. No luck on dead shrimp for me however. Did Ok on squid heads. Yes squid heads not the whole squid or squid strips just the whole head longer tentacles the better. For once the squid did not bring in a single hardhead. |

Last week I caught a limit at deadman's hole. I was using live shrimp threaded on a circle hook. I pinch their heads. Plenty of slot size and oversize last saturday. _________________ I don't run 'cause it makes me tired. I don't lift weights 'cause they're heavy. -Charles Barkley |

i prefer the live shirmp on with a split shot and a 2/0 hook works like a champ
perfect eating size in my opinion is 17"-24"
i think they like those shrimp jumping around
on the subject of fish most people don't like..........
