Hello everyone! I have been checking out this board for a few months and enjoy all the tips and tricks everyone has. I need some help though!

I have been to Packery twice and not had much luck either time(one small red and a decent flounder). I tried shrimp under bobbers, shrimp over heavy weights, and piggy's on both as well with not even a nibble.

I am going down again the second weekend of October and I wanted to see what ya'll could recommend. It's my friends bachelor party and he wanted to do some saltwater fishing in Corpus, so I'm in charge as I'm the only one of us who has been there before. We are all fairly experienced freshwater fisherman (bass, catfish, crappie, perch etc.) and I am from/grew up in Alaska salmon fishing all summer.

From what I can gather, the EASIEST way to rig up 5 guys and get them on fish would be to set them up with lemon rigs... but what do you bait with during this time of year? Crab? Shrimp? Perch?
I'm afraid of using shrimp because the bait suckers seem to make the bobber move and you loose the bait setting the hook on a 5 inch fish!

I'd very much appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks!!!
-Brandon

I've seen B-183's pics. He knows his fishing. I'll follow the same advice myself. Thanks. Cool

The easiest way to get five guys on fish is to hire a guide, Cap't Mike, you available. If your content on fishing Packery, your going about it the right way however remember the fish are not always on the same schedule that you are on. Early October should still be producing Smacks and Reds (and Trout and an early Flatties (albeit smallish ones).... Make sure your bait is not just alive but alive and kicking... As a side note, where will you guys be coming from?

in my opinion....fish as close to the rocks as you can, for reds anyway. if you have an old castnet..cut out the lead weights and use them on your line..that way you can lose all the weights you want and not feel bad about wasting money. but the live finger mullet is that way to go....easy to find and everything eats em. Very Happy good luck!

I think we are pretty set on fishing off the jetty just so we can have money for other bachelor party activities hahaha! We will be coming from all over, meeting in San Antonio, and driving down from there.

Thanks for the advice everyone...That helps a lot. I'm gonna rig up lemon rigs for these guys, and get a ton of finger mullet and live shrimp.

Like I said before, I'm pretty new with saltwater...so If I get a minnow bucket for shrimp, and one for finger mullet, will they stay alive if I just lower them into the water while we are fishing? I kept my piggies in a cooler a few weeks ago when we tried the jetty, and they ALL died within about 30 min.

As for rigging, I'm thinking about 2, maybe 3 feet on each side of my lemon rig, with braided line on the bottom side. I'm not 100% sure about hooks, but I figure I can make it work.

Also, when I fish live minnows in freshwater, we hook through the back, above the spine to keep the fish alive...would the finger mullet need to be rigged the same?

Thanks so much for all of the great advice guys!
