| It is pretty common but neat to see all the same. I have seen it on Padre Island and in the Sea of Cortez. |

We've got several sorts of bioluminescent things in our coastal surface waters, including multiple species of microscopic algae and some comb jellyfish up to more than 2 inches long, that in large concentrations make every breaking wave or splash of a fish glow pretty brightly. And if you look at some of your oldest dead shrimp on a dark night, quite often the bacteria commonly growing there will make it glow, too. _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!

I believe Escher's "Phospherescent Sea" culminated from the same phenomena. I had this picture in my bathroom for years.

Seen it a few times night fishing anytime a fish swirled you could see the flourescent green trail, or Id swirl my rod tip in the water to watch the cool effects.
One time after a lighting storm we ran out of the south end of the land cutting close to the island side and heading to PM. The flourescent trail behind us was the bightest Id ever seen, we were running with no spotlight and it was awesome looking. It made me think of that line in the Apollo movie, where he was talking about seeing the trail behind the aircraft carrier. |

This is very common in South Florida in the summer. In fact, we used to use a swish pole for catching snook at the pier or under the bridges. A swish pole was just a long pole with some heavy line and about 3' of wire tied to a piece of pipe with a treble hook on the end. You'd take the pole and pull the lure in a figure 8 pattern. Pitch black night and the lure would glow like crazy and leave a trail of fire behind it. The snook would come up under the lure, or hang out just outside the lure's path. You could see them because their side fins and tail would glow from agitatin the water. Eventually, the snook would drop under the lure and that was the time to change the pattern back to a circle. When the snook came up almost to the surface, the pattern was changed back to a figure 8 and BAM! They would knock the snot out of it just as it crossed near their snout. The fireworks were amazing. _________________ Live Full |

| I see it quite often launching in the AP area at around 3 or 4 in the morning. It was strange to see at first then was really cool. |

i've seen it in mansfield where you could spot the fish swimming by you . every disturbance in the water would light up in the moon light. i've seen it many more times on the beach. cool to watch it light up on a dark night right on the water line. _________________ I don't run 'cause it makes me tired.
