Never have used them before, I was wondering how wide do I open the legs so they can dig into the sand properly?

If the water is really rough or you are using too small a weight, open the spiders in the shape of a claw. Start at about 45 degrees but end up with the end of the claw pointing at the same angle as the copper piece on top of the lead. Hope I explained it good enough.

Set your weights like this

Nick at Break A Way has the set up for long distance when fishing with his weights keep a little slack in your line.

If you are fishing larger baits go to Roy's and pick up some larger weights. These weights you want to angle into the current so if some weed hits it will slide up your line. After casting jerk the rod lightly with the tip down for 10 seconds so the sand grabber can grab then tighten the line. If you are using circle hooks set your drag at 10 lbs and a J hook at the lightest drag setting you can afford.

take every ones advise. but then it does depend on where you are at and the conditions.. guess that is fishing.. taking experience and education and still not telling what you end up with.

I get the lead from any tire dealer for a six pack around closing time.
• Copper Pipe $1.20
• Copper wire 79 cents
• Pipe end caps $1.10
They cost around $3.50 each to make.
I make them from 10 OZ- 7 lbs. I use smaller weights in the High Banks because the sand is so soft and 3-5lbs from the 40MM on. We use 6-7lbs in the passes and cuts. We can keep bait out even when the weed is kind of bad and current is ripping. I also make a weight that allows the leader to go through the weight. The shark pulls the weight out backwards and does not feel the weight dragging as bad.

I bend the wire on mine away from the connecting eye and around the body of the weight. Still same angle(s) as everybody else just the other direction. I mostly use 2-4 oz. and not the bigger stuff. I thik this gives me a quicker hold in the surf and maybe a liitle less chance of line tangle in the spider weight if a fish rolls alot.
