I'd like to hear from those who have purchased a used boat from an individual. Did you pay the sales tax in addition to the selling price, or did the seller pay the sales tax with money deducted from the selling price?
Thanks

Man............................. y'all have to pay tax on USED boats?????? Used means "previously owned". Up here, that means no sales tax is collected on used boats, cars, etc. Cool

But not quite enough to make me want to move, Dave. Very Happy in Texas.

Taxes. . .every state gets it one way or another.

Some states have income tax, property tax (state and local), and sales tax (new and used stuff), etc. We have it pretty good, unless you are unemployed and own a million dollar house. Wink

Dude just B.S. on the price they don't ask too many questions down at TP&W, a little birdy once told me they put gift on the boat and $250 on the motor. Relatively new blue wave n motor.....no questions asked.

if you buy from a dealer the dealer will collect the tax on your behalf. If you buy from an individual you(the buyer) are responsible for the taxes. I believe that TxPWD go off of fair market value as in they go to NADA guides to got the value, no more BS'n your way through it any more. You can check what the taxes will be it is 6.25% on a boat motor and trailer, by going to www.nadaguides.com . Good luck!

I just registered today and they ask on the value.. If the value is low they asked for the bill of sale. Nada does not show correct value if the boat missing motor, damage, and etc.

At the courthouse you pay tax on a used vehicle blue book value no matter what you payed for it. Boats prolly next.

i bought a 4x4 burb in great shape with the tranny missing. i spent over 4,000 putting it back in near new shape with taxes on all the parts only to be told upon registering that "it's worth 8,500 and the tax is on that amount. even with all the bills in hand it came down to pay or sue. i paid and i'm still enjoying the beachride. gotta love government at it's best.
