I went looking for a new shotgun the other day and was suprised to find how expensive the over under shotguns are. I ended up with an semi automatic. I can understand differences in mechanics in automatic and pump shotguns can impact the speed at which the chamber is reloaded and can impact jamming and such and consequently price, but can someone help me understand why over unders are so expensive? I'm not a gunsmith so I don't understand what is so complex about different over unders that the prices are so high. By high for those of you who haven't looked I mean anywhere from $1600 to $3000. What is the difference between the $2600 Browning and the $400 Academy special? To me it's just a trigger, fireing mechanism, and a barrel. I'm sure I'm missing something and was just hoping someone could help.

A few things cause the price differences. First, with Browning, Beretta, Perazzi, Krieghoff, etc...you are paying for name recognition and centuries of experience building firearms. Second, O/U's require much more hand fitting....In other words, barrels have to be individually fit to each receiver, ejectors have to be fit and timing adjusted to ensure proper shell ejection, forend wood has to be fit to the barrel lug and barrels. You're also dealing with two firing pins, barrel selectors, inertial triggers, etc... that all have to work together. Materials can be different too...high-grade steel for barrels, highly figured wood, hand engraving as opposed to a stamped pattern. Goes on and on....note that if you do ever switch to an O/U though you'll never go back to a pump. Fit/finish, overall balance, and ease of operation are worth it for me. I would incude auto's too, but they're hard to beat for recoil reduction, especially magnum waterfowl loads.

I think the Yildiz O/U's that Academy sells are made in Turkey. My main concern would be availability of spare parts should something go wrong. With that said, they have lots of good reviews on the web.

Now I'll put in a plug for my preference....go Beretta!

I own one of the Academy Yildiz OU's and I have no complaints other than when it was new the action was a little tight but a case of shells and frequent cleaning freed it right up and it has been a wonderfull gun.
