Made one the other day and it worked great the first and second time I used it. The third time I used it I was having trouble getting a good vacuum, took it apart and found the rings on the rubber (from the test plug) were worn. Has anyone found a way to prevent this ? Should I use a dry lubricant to help stop the wear?

Some cooking oil to lubricate the PVC then tighten the screw.

I made one two years ago, and it still works great. Maybe if you tighten the screw on your test plug, it might expand making a better seal.

I have tightened the wingnut even with pliers... The ridges have worn down a little. Will try the cooking oil and buy another plug as a spare.

the easiest way is simply get a piece of pvc 2" the same ones you use for rod holders.... Get a old broom stick handle or buy one.. And find a rubber stopper that will fit snugly inside the pvc.. drill a hole in the stopper and use washers on both sides and attach to the end of the wooden pole.. now you have a multi use tool. You use it to suck sand and get ghost shrimp and you also use it for burying your rod holders into the sand so you dont have to hammer them or dig up sand..

Omaka,

Irregardless if one is industrious, self-sufficient or has a lot of cash to blow, so to speak, said one takes self-satisfaction making one's own shrimp pump, and that extends to even buying rod blanks to cater to our own specifications that'd suit our needs. What is mass produced, imported from China, or more likely the land of Crappola, then you get what you pay for. (preposition)....It can be "make-do for now,"as we live in our tin hut until next paycheck, or we can sit in our 3,000 square foot garage and possibly make something superior than is commercially available.

As for me, I can lose 20 Coho streamer flies in a days worth of fishing, and not blink at the cost, upon snagging in a river's rocks. Do I rush out to buy more? No...I sit, contemplate and figure out to keep it from happening (generally too much lead on the leader).
