|

When I am at the beach(PINS), I don't want to be contacted by anyone from work or home that is not already with me. I had never had a need to use a phone while at PINS. Last time I made it all the way to the Mansfield channel, another family was there and a 12 year old had fallen on the rocks, got his foot stuck between the rocks and broke. His father attempted to use his cell phone to get help and could not get reception. I tried using my pone and had the same problem. Somehow his father managed to get him out of the rocks, and as he rushed off to get medical attention for his son, he drove on the soft sand and got himself stuck in it. I pulled him out and then thought about all the what ifs and the lack of reception out at PINS. What does everyone else do for emergencies. The only type of communication I have been able to imagine is satellite phones. They are just about $800.00 per phone. Any suggestions.

We use CB radios down there, channel 1. Other than that, you can usually get cell phone service on top of the big dune by the turtle shack at the 39 mile, green hill at the 25 mile. I have gotten service at the 55 on top of a tall dune a few times. Your best bet is the CB, for a pull out or mabey to get a ranger.
Glad the kid was OK.

If you are at Manisfield jetties you can get a limited cell phone reception out of the tower at Port manisfield across the laguna.
I have been able to get cell phone reception using a 3 watt booster and exterior attenna on my truck at a few points
The system I used was this:

| i fish all up and down the intercoastal from bird island to south of port mansfield. i have a older model nokia 5100 from cingular. still use it. i have a extrenal antenna thats approx 12 inches in lenghth that you put on top of your vehicle. i havent had any problems getting out anywere ive been both inshore and offshore. the newer model phones dont have the output wattage the older phones have. cingular has been on me for the last two years to turn it in. ive told 'em until they make a phone with a extrenal antena hook up that i can recieve the same reliabe service with im going to keep it activated.hope this helps. oh by the way if happen to find a older one you might have a problem activating it. i ve had to use mine several times for folks in need that have no reception on thier phones. |

I have never been able to get anyone on ch1, I run a quality radio with some extra power and a good antenna. I have yet to have anyone get back to me on ch1, so I don't know how reliable that is. I also run a 2mtr ham radio.
I have a Sanyo 4900 on Sprint and I can make contact as far as I have driven maybe the 45mm without out much trouble.
Just my spare chage in comment.
I want to go fish PINS so bad but no $$$$$$

Hey All
Here is a great site for info on antenna's and boosters. They also sell them it a good sight check it out! One of the main problems is they are going all digital which has a limited range that requires having towers every mile of so.

My cell works fine from about the 56 or so all the way to the jetties without having to get up on the dunes. Other than that, a VHF marine radio can hail coast guard and boaters. _________________ JJ |

| A friend told me he has contacted the ships offshore using the marine radio and they patched him through to a phone call. |

I carry an old bag phone in my truck. It is not activated but 911 is suppose to work from any phone with or without activation. The old analog phones put out more power. _________________ paulj4400 |

What would emergency services do once you get hold of them? Will they come out to the Mans. jetties or down south on PINS at all!? _________________ Live to fish.
