|
|
About 1100 on Saturday a buddy of mine and I were trolling around the end of the north jetty in Port A. We saw something flapping around and did not know what it was. So we investigated. It was a manta ray that was about 8-9 feet across.
I did not know that manta rays were common around here. I have been in and around Port A for 48 years and have never seen or heard of them being around.
How rare an occurence was this? _________________ Buzzard's gotta eat, same as a worm. |

Years ago before the Gambling ship came, Exxon owned those docks and my dad worked for Exxon and was able to fish there. We had a manta ray come in one night about midnight under the lights. At first sight we thaught it was a blanket floating in the water. When it left, the ray had to turn sideways to fit through the pilons. |

Last year we were fishing the Port A jetty and saw one just cruising the channel, didnt know what it was, it looked like a shark caught in the middle of a tire at first with the way it was holding up its wing tip, then Mr fishhuntdrink and boys came in from the end of the jetty and told me it was a big manta ray cruising--it was an awsome sight, took pics but can't find them now. |

My son and I saw a huge one at the east cut south jetti two years ago. Looked like the size of a car. There was schools of glass minnows and it would open its mouth and swim right through them. Only camera I had was a cell phone, so pics didn't come out to well. Anyway, they are definetly a sight to see! |

We actually saw a large manta ray breach at the end of the North jetty this last Monday. It was quite a site to see a Beast that large completely out of the water, gliding through the air with no seeming effort. _________________ Capt. Ross L. McElwee

I was working on Main Pass 313 out of Venice LA. years ago. I stepped out of the Dog House to dump the coffee pot and saw something splashing around in the water. I thought it was a Porpoise and didn’t pay that much attention. Anyway after the coffee made I filled my cup and walked back outside. This time we saw about 30 of these things splashing on the horizon. The compressor mechanic I was working with said it was a flight of Manta Rays. Before the morning was over that flight of Rays numbered in the hundreds. I’d never seen anything like that before and probably won’t get to see it again. Some of the big ones were 18’ to 20’ across if they were an inch. I took a few pictures with my 110 Kodak Instamatic camera but you couldn’t see much on the developed pictures. It was one of those “you had to be there” things. |

I was kayak fishing about a half mile offshore of little shellabout 2 yrs ago. It was one of the crystal clear water days where its hard to get a bite. When about 50 yrds in front of me I noticed a 15ft plus creature just a few feet under the water. Thinking shark I started heading back in. A few minutes later it was airborne, seem like it came atleast 10ft out of the water, sounded like a car crashing into the water. Unbeliveable site, would of made an awesome picture. |

I have seen big ones breaching from the beach on PINS and I believe we had dozens of juveniles in the surf one time that KCON and Billy reported. |

I've seen several at BHP and they always seem to show up when the water is clear and green and there is large schools of baby watermelon shad or rain minnows. I know they are plankton filter feeders, but I assume they add small fish to their diet too. They are so huge they look out of place near shore like that, but are fun to watch. |
