The ones you stick in the sand ...Eh I forgot the best diameter and length Mine all got driven over, loaned out, broken, washed out/ pulled out into the gulf or otherwise lost somehow and etc Hmmm Maybe one of 'em was made into a digeredoo ?? Haha
If I remember... approx 2" diameter and 5' long? Biggest gear in 'em would be Penn 4.0's but mostly surf rods Big time thanks in advance!!!! Gearing up and rigging up for this weekend and oh my, this summer is looking great!!!

2 in and 5 ft long works. I like mine a little longer for surf fishing as it gets the line up and out of the gut a little farther. (Less seaweed)

But then I'm 6 ft tall. You will need to make the length call as it is really a preference.

Also, I find that using the Gray Electrical PVC conduit makes for a MUCH stronger and more durable Sand Spike.

I have had some for years, and have even run over them.

They take a beating when driving them in and don't crack as easily as the white PVC does.

Just my wo cents!!

Glenn

I have two black one's. Bought a 2 1/2" diameter, 10 foot long piece of PVS and cut in half at a 45 degree bias. Put the pointed end in the ground 2 feet down, and you have a 3 foot tall pole holder that holds well, that are smooth on the ends where you reel sits against it.

In wet sand, you can just turn them back and forth with a little weight on them and they go in, in dry sand, break out the rubber mallet and pound them in.

Very Happy

I know it makes you look silly, but you can also put your lips in the hole and suck real hard and the pvc will slide right in wet sand. I was really dubious when someone told me that but I tried it anyway..lol. It works. Kinda like a manual pump, sucking the air out. Anyways, try it when noone is looking.

Want to put a flair on the top of the pipe to keep your rod handles from getting scraped up? Just heat to pipe end till it starts to get pliable and then shove it into a wine bottle. Puts on a nice rounded flair.

4 lb dead blow from harbor freight works great to drive the holders home. Do the vacuum trick and add a half dozen wacks with the dead blow and they wont go anywhere....have had a 12/0 in them no trouble. Get em 12 -14 inches down and they'll hold. Or you can dead blow them in to drier sand to the same depth then pour water into and around em to set them in tight.
