See the closing paragraph in David Sike's 5/31/09 column in the Caller-Times http://www.caller.com/news/2009/may/31/packery-the-other-jetty/

Quote:
You will lose some tackle. So bring extra hooks, sinkers and leader material. And while you’re composing your supply list, please please include a becah parking sticker for your windshield. These permits are available at convenient stores on the island and often at beach entrances. You’ll see the tarp unless you arrive before they do, as I did. The sticker will cost you $12. And I tell you from experience that the city will extort $150 from you if you park at the base of the Packery jetty without one.

Used up my monthly quota for a LTTE, or I'd write something comparing the extortionary fees and fines for parking at the Packery jetties to what's been happening at BIB. In April 2001, the voters approved free jetty parking on paved lots with handicapped ramp access. This is your golden opportunity, so start sending your LTTEs complaining about this to the C-T today.

EXACTLY. I been holling about this since it opened. Big scam the city has going on. Suprised no suit has been filed on tickets being given there.

Im not a great writer, but will send one in on your post info Johnny.

Just my opinion here, but I think $12 a year for a beach parking sticker is pretty reasonable. I understand a good portion of the money goes to cleaning up the mess a lot of folks leave behind. I am amazed to go to the beach on a Monday morning and see the piles of beer cans and other stuff left behind. It's just as bad around the Packery Jetties. Usually by Tuesday they have it cleaned up, so at least I can see the parking fees being put to good use.
Again, just my opinion... Cool

If that were all there was to it, your opinion would be shared. However, the cleanup around Packery Channel is supported by a separate maintenance fund created years ago as a part of the Packery Tax Increment Financing scheme approved in that April 2001 election. The Packery TIF redirected tax money that would have gone into the City of CC's General Fund into paying off instead the Packery Channel Project bonds sold for creating that maintenance fund, opening the channel, restoring the beach regularly, building the jetties, and installing the parking lots, rstrooms, showers, ramps, etc. in twin jetty parks.

So you see, worthy as it appears to be to pay for beach cleanup with the parking stickers, the CC taxpayers ALREADY paid not only for the cleanup, but also for hard-surfaced parking lots and more, at the foot of each jetty. Besides, a recent study showed the salaries and overhead for selling those beach parking stickers are barely covered by the sticker sales, so would you care to guess who's really paying for the beach cleaning elsewhere?

City's about $4 mill in the hole due to the Recession. So, the city and the county will try EVERYTHING possible to get those monies, especially jacking up real estate property taxes.

When does it end?

12 would only be reasonable in my mind if:

I could drive to the STICKER MANDATED areas and be fairly sure i won't get stuck in a two wheel drive auto. I don't wan't the whole beach paved. At least for 12 bucks grade the entrances to the beach.

I could make it to South Packery Jetty with out getting stuck.

Come on all the $$$$$ and you gotta have 4x4 to get to beach.

I think some sections should be left natural, but at least the entrances should be leveled out.

Ran into the gentleman that generally patrols in a white city truck along with one of his helpers.

There were also two helpers at the entrance ready to chase people down.

Yes, I relunctantly purchase permit because I do not want my fishing ruined for two months trying to pay ticket off.

But here is some information based upon my experience with the guy:

1. Very nice fella and talkative
2. I leave my sticker on dash board. No, I do not switch vehicles as my wife's
vehicle would not make it out there without getting stuck. I do so because I received a warning from police stating any sticker other than registration and inspection below ADI line is subject to ticket. I had my Del Mar parking permit stuck on, and I believe it was something to pull me over. ADI line is about 2 to 3 inches from top of windshield. You should have letters ADI on driver side.

I informed the gentleman of my story and he thought that was crazy, I agreed. I misspoke telling him it was Corpus police. If he reads this, it was Portland. He told me Corpus police know better. Well, do we all stay in Corpus city limits.

He also told me the sticker says on the back that it must be on windshield, and I detected a little atittude. Here is what it says, "Valid only for the beaches of Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, and Nueces County. This permit expires on last date of year issued. To apply sticker: Remove the clear liner by peeling at perforation across front of sticker and affix to inside of windshield. For additional information please call (361) 826-3469." Anyone read anything here about "must" be applied?

To be fair, I still have last year's sticker and it does state it must be permanently affixed to winshield.

3. I asked him if this was supposed to be free parking immediately on both sides of the jetty. His response was something to the effect of people get confused with Corpus vs. County property . . . In other words, I did not get a straight yes or no answer.

The next time I see him, I will correct my mistake about it being Portland and not Corpus even though it does not matter except for clarification and honesty. What about the folks from WAY out of town. Can they just tell their officers that Corpus police understand?

I also plan on seeking a more straight forward answer about free parking along the jetty.

I will post when I am able to speak with him again. I might try calling the number on back of sticker; I just want to make sure I am speaking to same person.
