Last weekend, a Russian neighbor family had a garage sale and I scored on the fishing side of it: 17 reels, of which most were junkers, either whole or in various stages of disrepair....Of those, six were in decent shape, upon clean up; and, of those, three caught my eye, so to speak:
On a scale of 1-10:
Abu Garcia Mitchell 300: 9.5 and so awesome!
Abu Garcia Mitchell 306: 9.0 and wonderful
And this reel, the "steal of the deal" -- Pardon me, all-ya-aspiring rappers!:
"D.A.M. Quick 330n" 9.0 .....Looks like a 12 lb test reel, with a 220-250 yard capacity, and its all metal!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to do my research, but for a box of free reels of medi-ocre and surprise junk, I have found this 10-12 oz reel "bad-arse!".....No effing plastic gears..everything pure metal!
http://img35.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0012c.jpg
It is a 1970's reel made in West Germany.....
I'd like to say its 3:1 gears but I haven't cleaned it internally...All I can say is that the old Penn Spinfishers have another thing coming????!!!!?!!

I gave up on the plastic Abu junk in recent years...Part of this garage sale junk was a(n) Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000 B reel..It is 95 percent complete....It is only missing the tiny screws on the left side plate and the end knob-ma-jigger-thing-mabob....
It's yours free if you'll pay shipping....Otherwise, I'd trade for a Mitchell or this strange reel above I've come to love! |

Grew up on the 300 and the 306. Still have several of each. Not so good on the drags, had to repaint and replace the grips 'cause those were cheap plastic. Good internal parts and caught lots of fish in Copano Bay.

When introduced (40 - 50 years ago???) the Mitchell 300 was probably the best spinning reel made. Long lasting and hard working and took lots of abuse. I used one for years and literally caught thousands of specs on Mitchell 300's. Would still work great today (I still have one left that's only about 20 years old, last used about 6-8 years ago). Only drawback is it's a little heavy by todays standards. In the early 70's, I also used a few Cardinal reels. They may have been even better than the Mitchells. The Dam Quicks were German made and were also a very good reel for the time although they were lighter weight and probably didn't stand up to the abuse that the Mitchells and Cardinals did. _________________ Big Ed

i've got a box of old reels around somewhere which if i remember correctly includes a few mitchell's and an old red plastic non level wind penn. are they worth anything?. also have a few old 3-4 piece bamboo flyrods(10-12') with small reels. give me a ring and maybe you can stop for a brew and peek. _________________ ccbobber |

I am soooooo thankful for the replies. Over the years I knew of the Old-School Mitchells and the fan-club behind 'em....However, I am talking about that West German reel, which is a lot lighter, and far ahead of it's time......In other words, why should I pay 120-150 for a new Penn reel when I can "ebay" one of these babies for 40-50 clams?
I initially thought of Mitchell spinning reels as good bait reels...but this German reel would make a lure-chunker all day due to it's light weight.
I am also puzzled why no one hasn't gone all "Craiglist" on me (!) when I offered a 60 dollar reel for free?!!!
Yes, send me five bucks for shipping and it is yours, free!

you have a damm quick.. that is an awesome reel... period.. 10.0
someone stole mine.. actually it was my dads.. they made 2 different sizes..
loud clicker.. great drag.. easy to work on.. but dont loose the bail screw.. it tends to get loos and you can loose the screw and the winding bushing or what ever it is called. _________________ Fish and Hunt Baby.... so tight lines and clear scopes. |

ccbober,
I am living in Alaska, as in "exile." I'd gladly stop by for a brew and to look over old reels. I know "reel doctor" and others are far more educated in this field than I....For years I knew of the old-school Mitchells and the braggin' rights.....This is all new to me, now that I have one of these precious pieces of gold in my possession!.... |

Guys,
Ease off on the private messages.....I'm offering the Abu 6000 B as a freebie.....Not that D...A...M...Quick reel....I don't have a kitchen weight counter yet, to measure to the exact weight...Trust me on this reel, that is the DAM Quick one...... I loaded it with 8 lb Stren today and put it to the test.....Snapped like a pea, when put it to the drag test!
I'm not kidding guys, this reel is like Nazi UFO's....Its a secret science that escaped once, and I won't let it again!
If anyone doubts me, or wants to work with me to purchase more of 'em, then let me know....They are just as good as old school Penns, if not better! |

SnakeCan gets my Abu 6000 B, pending his shipping charges in the mail....If he deems it not worthy of further repair I promised him halibut, salmon and the freshest of King Crab.....Now, let's give some Las Vegas-like odds -- CORPUS-STYLE! -- that he'll whine, b*tch and moan that my freebie reel is garbage yet my "care package" of seafood is too big for his freezer? I'd love it!
Guys, if you haven't found out by now my personality:
I love life. I lost my brother; and I lost my dad; and I just lost a beloved cousin too closely together. I gave up a career to actually live life, not to be a wage-slave to think "two week vacation per year" is worth one!.... Anyone who can pay for a round trip ticket to Alaska will have free room/board with me....I will promise you on that...And if you can't pay for such a trip, then my cousin and I will help you out.
Now, back to why I didn't get back to you sooner today....My cousin, his mom and I attended a(n) NHL All-Star vs local team hockey game .....I know nothing next to hockey, being an Emmit and Dirk fan! But you'd spot me in the crowd ------- ya know, the belligerent drunk, puking when I think you aren't looking, and hollering, when I can, "throw him a Hail Mary, Roger!" ....and "Dude, go for the extra point, Raphel Septien, but stay away from underage women!"
We got the autographs today of these legendary players (per the brochure, of course!) :
Bernie Nicholls and Doug Smail
To have spent so much on charity made me feel so good; and for these multi-millionare retired NHL players to donate their time for a good cause truncates any selfishness for a greater-good, for a humane cause. Too bad no one thinks Oz, and his crappy fishing reports makes him a "star," marine biologist and all! I'd gladly pay for his plane ticket up here!
And for all the Princess Sarah fans, it was a "no-show." Gosh, darn all-mighty! |
