Do any of you guys use spinning reels when throwing plastics or topwaters? If so what kind of setups do you have? |

I use a left handed curado for my top waters.. But yes I use a spinning reel for plastics. I use mostly 2500 or 3000 series shimano on a medium light rod. Cant go wrong with a saros , stratic, sustain, or stella. |

I use Shimano Stradic 2500's with 6-7 foot St. Croix rods depending on your need. I run 20# power pro on them and use them for everything. They have been bulletproof for me, including topwaters and plastics. _________________ Capt. Ross L. McElwee

My go too rod and reel is a 7-ft American Rodsmiths: H3-TSSML with a Shimano Stradic MgFB ST2500MGFB loaded with 20# PowerPro and I use FC leader below a very small SPRO swivel. |

a Falcon Coastal xg 7'6" medium caster.. with either a penn slammer 360 or shimano soltace 4000.
20# power pro..
with any of the braided.. use leader material.. cant tell you how pissed i was loosing a trouphy trout because i was to lazy to put a short shot of mono or fc for the terminal tackle...
and check your line for nicks braided does not hold up to abrasion at all. _________________ Fish and Hunt Baby.... so tight lines and clear scopes. |

Spinning vs Baitcaster is obviously an unlimited debate and will always come down to personal preference and comfort or confidence, just like your lure choice.
I use a baitcaster for both tops and plastics but have a stella or stradic on my boat at all times for certain situations. ie. longer topwater casts trying to locate fish or found fish in a challenging situation and having to throw into a stiff wind and finally if you are site casting and always have your target or fish in site.
When it comes to plastics, other than working birds out of a boat when the bite is fast and furious, I do not believe a spinning rig can hold a candle to a well balanced, quality baitcaster and the reason is simple physics. Most of the time be it trout or reds, the bite w/ a plastic or a corky is nothing more than a tick, not even a bump and w/ a baitcaster you have literally a direct line or connect w/ your lure, unlike w/ a spinning reel. It is not physically possible to pick up on the classic winter "tick" that could be a 5-10# trout as effeciently w/ a spinning rig as a baitcaster.
Sorry to ramble. I don't leave home w/out both, but you are missing opportunity if it's a slow/no bite in the middle of winter and you have no connection w/ your lure. |

A lot of that feel is a moot point if you just use superline and the right rod.
Also, spinners are WAY up the heap for casting hard and far into the wind. _________________ Dave

Thanks guys, your input was all well said. I guess you are right when it comes to personal preference. I was just curious on using spinning reels for lures. I personally use a spinner and actually find it harder using anything else.. just my preference. thanks for the feedback. |

I have so many of both that I just rotate. I take at least one of each. It is nice to have a spinning reel there after I backlash the hell out of my casting reel. _________________ Give a Man a Fish and he will eat for a day. i hear you bro..
i have to many spinning reels and finally will no longer purchase.. but that is because i take so many friends down there that have no idea how to fish.. unfortunately that has caused me to neglect my casting reels
have pleanty of conventional for the surf for biggins.. but time to get over the back lash bs and get aquainted with my bait caster. for working the lures _________________ Fish and Hunt Baby.... so tight lines and clear scopes. |

Too bad that is not an option in the surf down here. I prefer a low profile baitcaster for topwaters like a curado or revo, but it is nice to have a spinner for into the wind expecially when throwing soft plastics. Also, it is nice to switch up when throwing topwaters all day. From what I have seen, the Penn slammer is a tough reel. I have used stradics in the surf and they do not hold up. To be honest, I am starting to have some serious doubts if my new revo is going to make it through Trout season. Thank God for Academy customer service!!

The best baitcasting reel I have ever used in the surf was my Abu Garcia 5600 C5 Magtrax. I hope the crackhead that stole it out of my house enjoys it. I also hope he or she gets a nice big rock when they pawn it and freakin O.D's. That would make me happy

i use micro spinners, more specifically pinnacle tiny deadbolts, for about a year now just for the fun of it. got punked by a large trout at the humble and a LARGE bass at choke, other than that i do pretty well. |
