I have made a ghost shrimp gun or pump or whatever you call it. How do you hook a ghost shrimp for use in the surf? or is it better to catch them and then use them in the bays or causeways or jetties etc? Also hs the cold front hit down there yet and will this front totally screw up the fishing for this coming week? _________________ If the minimums werent good enough....they wouldnt be the minimums. |

They are called creature catchers and Roy's has them for around 20 dollars. Be careful not to use them on the National Seashore. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

www.limestonemedia.com/fishing/how-to-make-ghost-shrimp-pump.html
I made a few adjustments. I used 1 inch pipe for the handle and not the 3/4 inch stuff, and instead of using a 2 inch cap for the barrel, I used a 2"-1.5" reducer so I didnt have to drill a hole in the 2 inch cap. Other than that it was very easy and just like the directions. If you go to Lowes you can buy the pipe in 5 foot sections and make two out of it, if you go to the home depot you have to buy the pipes in 12 foot sections.
Total cost for two was about 12 dollars.
Why cant you use them on the national seashore? _________________ If the minimums werent good enough....they wouldnt be the minimums.

Regs prohibit ghost shrimp harvesting along PINS. Food for the birds.
EDIT: Tyler has the months listed below _________________ Jeff

Sand pumps are restricted in the park from October 1st thru June 30th. From July 1st to September 30th sand pumps are allowed for the collection of ghost shrimp.

Tyler, when they revised the Superintendent's Compendium last month they left it like this:
(d)(1)(6) Digging for bait is illegal (this includes the use of sand pumps for ghost shrimp)
http://www.nps.gov/pais/parkmgmt/upload/Superintendent%20Compendium%20FINAL%202009.pdf
Did you get those dates from when the proposed changes were being discussed last year? _________________ certified whiting slayer |

I just read that link Rodbreaker. What an eye opener. Thanks for posting it There are a lot of new rules that I didn't know had taken effect.
As far as using ghost shrimp pumps for "bait", would bait be considered a resource collected to intentionally use in fishing? I took my daughter down to PINS in January and used a pump to show her what sealife exists below the sand (ghost shrimp, tiny crabs, etc.). I had no intention of using the critters as bait, and all critters were returned to the hole left behind. I had no fishing rods with me..just the pump. No more than 5 minutes into my adventure a nice ranger lady pulled up and explained that the pump device was prohibited. I apologized and put it in the truck for the rest of the trip.
Here's another thing I saw in the Park Compendium:
(e) (i) The park is closed to the use of artificial light for the viewing of wildlife
This includes any spot lights, flood lights, homemade or purchased light poles with more
than one light, or any type of lighting systems that would disrupt or affect the wildlife, (eg:
bird, fish and turtles species) and the dark night sky.
I guess that's one more thing I won't be doing with my kid. I enjoy using a flashlight to check out what kind of sea critters abound at the surf's edge at night. I never thought my maglite bothered the minnows and spotted crabs near the shoreline, but perhaps they may deter turtles from nesting?

I read the link also, PINS is almost becoming user unfriendly. IMO

Excellent point, Mike. But there is hope (maybe). There is a grad student from a college located in College Station who is currently completing her master's on PINS. Her project involves interviewing those who use the park in order to better establish communication btwn the feds and park users. If any one is interested in being interviewed, let me know and I will find her contact info.
