a good bait for traps is the 3-4 for a dollar small cans of cat food from the dollar store. just snap open the pop top, do not open all the way. lasts for about a week. good luck.

I live a lot further back in the canals than you. I do real well with the crabs and two traps just like yours.

Keep the crab trap it is worth it

Of course you're referring to non-game fish, right. It's illegal to use even the remains of a gamefish for bait.

You could try wrapping it in some smaller mesh wire like for a screen door.

Dunno about that. I was catching mullet with my cast net last weekend. I see the perch picking at the dock pilings and my bait.

That is a crab trap not a pin perch trap.

I figured. I have a piece of hardware cloth probably about that size that will fit on the bottom half of your trap which will allow it to work "double duty", you're welcome to it. twist tie it on, pull the trap up fast and you should be in business. or like the others said, keep the crab trap and go buy a perch trap.

I still see mullet, lots of them, but they're the big ones. They are there every day at my back dock.

Back to catching perch: If you get a tiny hook you can catch all the perch you want in the canals. Just get a small hook, I don't know the size, but the curved part would barely go around a kitchen match. Put some fish bites or shrimp on it and you'll get all of the perch you want. Roy's carries those small hooks.

Good luck,

Still mullet jumping in the canals, though activity has calmed down quite a bit from what you see in warmer months.

Didn't have any luck with the cast net. . . but I suck with the cast net so that doesn't mean a whole lot. Can't get the damn thing to hit the water completely spread out.

to that end, get a sabiki rig and put tiny pieces of bait or even better tiny pieces of fish bites on there. you can slay the perch with that rig. sabiki's are only a dollar or two at academy, roys, or even HEB/wallyworld

You have to pull those traps out of the water fast, those perch are smart. They will all fly out of the trap single file. They are pretty smart.
