Daniel "Fish-hook" and I left Kingsville for a quick trip to the Packery jetties early Saturday morning. I had been keeping in touch with Spoon'r to help target a few fish and the best way out there. You do have a good walk, but well worth it.
Fish-hook caught and landed this nice 44in Tarpon with a top water lure. The 25min fight was just what this shallow water angler needed to get him back to the depths. The fish was landed on an Abu Garcia 6500 C3 and a Breakaway custom 11'9" Way to go amigo!!
I later hooked up with this nice 25in Spanish Mac. The fish was landed on a Abu Garcia 6500 C4 matched with a Breakaway 10'6" the next best thing to the microwave, and a Spoon'r 2oz Fatmama.
Both fish were released healthy and ready for another tug-a-war jetty match. _________________ Save Water, Drink CrownRoyal!

Great report CR55. By the way I love the way Nick has done your custom Breakaway rods in the Crown Royal trim. They looked great when I saw them getting finished and turning on the racks.

Great report. VERY nice tarpon and spanish. Was that your first tarpon? My hubby (tarpon_tamer) landed one about 5 yrs ago when we lived in Brownsville. _________________ wishn i was fishn...at the beach! <*)}}}>< |

Thanks Tyler, I have had a few built there. I think you are the one with the nice Crown Royal reel covers on the beach, and was wondering what happened to the contents. Humm?
The bite was VERY slow. Others on the rocks landed a few small bait fish, a large panfish-type, possibly a triggerfish????? and a small pup sandbar shark. Nothing too exciting.
It was his first tarpon. First hook up and was able to land it. AWESOME!
I live in Brownsville and have recently started fishing the jetties. The tarpon there are very hard to persuade to bite. I have seen some 6ft+ off the Boca Chica jetty. The Mansfield jetty holds several tarpon, but you need a kayak to get in the zone. Other members have been landing a few there as well. _________________ Save Water, Drink CrownRoyal!

Tarpon_Tamer and I lived in Brownsville about 3 or so yrs. ago. And if you look at his avatar, that is where he landed it. Only he was not on the jetties, he landed it in the surf. And, even though he landed a really nice one, he is continuing his search for yet one more. But I guess all fishermen are like that...He goes on a trip down there w/ some friends in Oct. this will be his 3rd yr for that trip. Thanks for sharing your report. _________________ wishn i was fishn...at the beach! <*)}}}>< |

| Great to meet you and Fishhook on Saturday...the pics show up much better on a computer screen than in the glare of the morning sun! I took my two teenage nephews out there on Sunday. Neither of them have the opportunity to fish much. After giving Gregg(16 yrs.) a quick primer on how to cast a 10 foot spinning rig, I started chucking a Pencil Popper with my 7' heavy baitcaster. 10 minutes later, I heard a shout and turned around to see Gregg holding on for dear life while his fish was headed for Florida. The Top Dog hooks pulled free after about 5 minutes and we didn't get to see the fish(I'm guessing mackerel by the way it ran), but I'm certain he'll remember the morning! I had a couple of halfhearted passes at the Pencil Popper and landed a pup blacktip. The boys were hot and hungry by 8:45am, so we bailed for breakfast. Took 8 kids offshore the next morning, hooked a couple of kings and a 20 lb. jack crevalle. The weather arrived the next day and ended the clear, calm conditions at the jetty ends...still pretty stained this morning but clearing up a bit. Thanks for letting me have a go with your Breakaway rig...you are a brave and generous man for allowing a total stranger to cast your prize equipment! Now I suddenly need a new surf rod. |
