Was lucky enough to make it back down to Rockport this past weekend .Fished till noon on Saturday and Sunday, just to hot to grind out there all day. I saw a lot of ugly water down there due to the 12" of rain that fell on Wednesday .A month ago the water was too salty due to drought now its too fresh from 20+ inches of rain in some areas, gotta love that Texas weather. Now on to the fishing.
Sat. 8th
Headed out of St .Charles at first light heading to San Antonio Bay .Could tell it was raining over that way so we cut off and ran into Mesquite Bay to fish some shell.Had a good top water bite till about 8:30 caught approx. 12 between 16" and 23" and lost several others in that range. Fished a gold skitterwalk for first 15 minutes without a bite so I changed to chart./silver top dog jr. and started catching fish right away .I knew they were there the bait was jumping everywhere. My wife was fishing with shrimp under a Texas Rattler popping cork and had approx. 8 keepers to 22 inches. We each decided to keep two each for dinner and let others go to catch another day .Caught a couple small trout and a 20" red after the top water gave out on a 4" sea shad in bone diamond.Saw a guide with four guys wearing them out with croaker a little farther up the reef.Ran to second chain and made two wades only catching dinks with shrimp and plastics .Water was ugly pouring out of the ICW .Stopped and waded some grass in Ayres with no luck and called it day.
Sun. 9th
Ran to same reef we fished in Mesquite the morning before and nothing .Tide was lower but the big problem I believe was the lack of wind .It was like glass till 9 or 10 o'clock .Found some fish mid morning in Carlos over some deeper shell all caught on shrimp .I think if you want to catch them on artificial's you better catch them early due to warm water .I was hard headed and just knew I could catch some good fish in my honey hole in St. Charles even though the water looked like 3 day old tea.Well I was wrong, last weekend the trout were so thick on that shell you could catch them just about every cast and this week 1- 18" fish .Quite humbling. Was back at ramp by noon .Not going to make it down there this week but will be down the 2 following weekends for sure .I did get some pics.of the trout on Sat. now to figure out how to post. Will add later.
