Hit Horace Caldwell Pier around 3 in the afternoon on Wednesday. Light wind and some big waves=surfers Evil or Very Mad . Once again they were there doing there thing within easy casting distance. I and everyone else out there let them have their space and headed to the end where just about the only space available to fish was towards deeper water. They decide to swim/surf in front of the pier because there were some decent waves, but after allowing them the whole right side, they needed more. Its frustrating, but stuck it out until dark when they all left. Not a single bite while they were around.

Plenty of bait fish on a sabiki rig. Threw out chunks of whiting. Still nothing. Around 10pm my little spinning reel with 20# test bows over and I just think its a gafftop. I was wrong. After a 20 minute fight, I end up with this grandaddy of a red. My biggest to date. Very Happy

Thankful there were some generous people who assisted me with my drop net and helped me hoist him on the pier. Its all I caught, but well worth it.

I think I need a bigger cleaning table. What do you think Question

Oh yeah, measured 40" on the pier but after icing him down and getting him home on went 38". Why is that?

Caught him on a chunk of whiting!

Studies have been conducted to test this shriknage theory and it doesn't happen. Most length lost due to ice was 1/8". That's pretty negligible. Most likely the reason was that different rulers measure differently. Not all are exactly on. Good rule: the more expensive the ruler the more accurate.

Obviously, any Sienfeld fan knows about cold and shrinkage.

Nice red! We must have just missed you. We left about 3pm. You were right, there were some big waves that afternoon. We caught about 12 macks and a couple of pomps and a sheephead but that was about it. The day before was much better and the macks were running pretty good size. Caught a really nice 17" mangrove snapper while fishing for sheephead. Tuesday my buddy wandered over to the south jetty and hung a couple of kings. He landed a 18 pounder and got spooled by another. Smile

When you measure a fish out of the water, it is limber and easily measured, thus you get the max amount of inches. That is why some people catch 28.5" reds in tournaments and fold them in half and pack them on ice. When it comes time to measure, good luck even getting 27.5" out of the fish unless you soak it is water and limber it back up. That's about all I can figure could have happened to your fish. That and the rulers on icechests suck, get a Checkit stik
