Agenda Item 16 on the July 11, 2006 Corpus Christi City Council meeting is to approve City funding for two lifeguards and defibrillator equipment to be put at Newport Pass and Padre Balli County Parks. Nothing on the agenda about similar lifesaving amenities at the Padre Island seawall or either side of the Packery Channel jetties. City seems set on attracting people into the piping plover critical habitat at Newport Pass instead of fulfilling the promises made for new recreational facilities at the jetties, and, since the City won't allow driving in front of the seawall, the need for someone to save all those drowning pedestrians and worn-out fishermen hiking back from the south jetty seems obvious. May go stick my nose into the council meeting tomorrow on those accounts.

just out of curiousity, who designated the areas as critical habitat for the piping plovers?

Oil Field, my old employers did just as I was being forced to retire. They had in turn been sued to make them designate critical habitat. While I had nothing to do with the designation personally, I approved of that particular critical habitat unit (officially cited as TX-7) in the Packery vicinity because I'd seen the results of piping plover surveys made back when Fishtrackers applied for and got the Corps permit to open Packery. The birds were concentrated mainly north of Zahn Road, so the opening of the pass had little direct effect on them.

Make sure you don't touch that private beach, either!

don't worry fella's I'll be between packery and the last hotel(el consante) this weekend with the shark rods and yak. I figure with all the chumming going on a Tiger may show up Wink The in-laws love it there so that's where they take us once a year. It's a compromise my wife says O.K. as long as I hang out at the beach with her family Twisted Evil

When they close the beach I plan on doing a lot of chumming right in front of the resort to attrack sharks in the wade cut, let the rich kids swim on thier private beach. Or, when I fillet my fish instead of throwing the remains in the water I will throw them on the private beach for the aroma. Now some may think this is mean or crazy but if they get thier private beach I plan on making it a real "redneck riviera" so on sunday mornings when they think they are going to see a beautiful sunrise they will see me in a thong and teeshirt with the sleeves cut off chumming for sharks in the wade cut, that is if this disabled veteran can somehow get my gear from the parking lot down the beach.
