Been reading this forum for a long while now and it holds a vast amount of info but I have a few questions that may seem off topic. I ask anyone to read this and reply with any info you can. I thank you very much in advance...

I have a birthday coming up in a couple of weeks and the wife wants to take me fishing in Port 'A' (charter) and do some gambling on that casino cruise deal. This is all fine and dandy as we take overnight trips surf fishing and sleeping in the truck. Well this time she wants to stay in a hotel that is located right there by the jettys close to the ferry/fishermans wharf. Now I am a total newbie when it comes to those hotels right on the beach by the jetty. I have driven by them on the beach many times but never noticed the names of them. Considering we are going to hit the casino cruise and will be going out on a charter, all located close by, can anyone inform me of the names of some of those hotels or shoot me a link where I can find this info?

Here is the plan: arrive in Port 'A' Friday and take the casino cruise that night. After I lose several $$$ I am wanting to pull the truck up the the jetty and fish a few more hours (not walk down the jetty but park right there). I am hoping to get a hotel room close by so the wife can head there if she is out of it. The following day again hit the jetty with the charter fishing later in the day. That night, more fishing from the jetty. Leave sometime on Sunday. So basically I am looking for one of those hotels right there by the jettys/ferry/casino cruise/fishermans wharf, those hotels where you can walk out of it right to the beach where people have tents can camping out. We stayed at The Mayan Princess a few weeks ago but dont really want to spend that kind of cash just for the two of us and being that far away from where we will spend most of our time.

Again, thanks for reading and any replies would be great. I have googled for the last 2 hours and can't come up with any info on those hotels right there close to the jettys. I personally didnt think it would be that hard to find info on that group of hotels that sit on the beach close to the jetty/ferry but apparently I was wrong.

Bonus questions: I figured if I am going to ask, may as well ask everything Smile

I have never parked by the jettys for more than a few hours at a time. Is there a fee to park? Also, considering I will be fishing at night with Miller Lite, would I be more successful parking right up by the jetty or moving to one of the piers and fishing from it? I have been strickly a surf guy and we set up on PINS much more south then where we plan to be this time. This weekend trip is more of a gamble/charter thing but I want to soak a few lines late night and have a hotel room within walking distance in case the wife doesnt want to stay up as long as myself.

Its free to park at the Jetties,
As far as hotel near them there isnt any close to the Jetties. The big one near the pier is a condo. Not sure if it open to the public rentals or not by the night. Most of em rent by the week or month. Its prolly a mile walk from there to the Jetties.
There is a Best Western on Ave G. st (farther south) that is right near the beach. Close walk if you want to surf fish.

http://www.thedunescondos.com/ its right next to the pier and the rooms are pretty nice, I think thats about as close as you can get to the jetties,and im pretty sure you can rent rooms by the night.

You gotta watch that Casino schedule as the ferry's can leave you hanging out to dry. They close the gates 15 minutes before boarding on the Texas Treasure and if you aren't there in time you're done. The ferry can be unpredictable as far as getting across.

You just go to the area you are interested in and type 'motel' in the search field and you get the above link returned to you. Switch to the satellite view to get a feel for how far they are form the jetties

Next, erase motel and enter charter

Thanks for the info . Looks like it's going to be The Dunes. I went to http://earth.google.com/ and downloaded it. Wow, I am very impressed. Takes you from outer space right down to the pier. Small free download.

Yeah Tyler I learned the hard way about the ferry system. I was told to arrive early due to the fact that nobody really knows how long the line will be to get on the ferry. Well we arrived early and there was no line at all. Had 1 1/2 hours to kill. Better to be there early I guess. Thanks for the tip though. If it were up to me we would have probably been late boarding as the ferry line filled up FAST. Just like any rush hour it seems. I was glad to arrive early then to sweat it out waiting in line.

Ok I am going to push my luck and ask a few more n00b questions...

I take some of the younger crowd with me to that jetty (south?) close to the ferry where you can drive right up and park. For those that fish there, what do you suggest for a rig and bait? I will have a 12' Unattractive Stik with an Okuma spooled with 20# test and another Stik of the same length with 25# test. Should I be using a trout rig that holds the bait a few feet off the bottom or should I use a rig that tends to keep the bait ON the bottom? Although fun for the kids, I don't want to sit there all night pulling junk fish up the rocks. So what should I use this time of year? Rig/bait. Again this will be at night, from teh pier or the jetty depending on the replies I get and suggestions. Normally I would throw some spoons in the 2nd or 3rd during the day but as it is I will be sitting around letting the bait do the work at night.

Also, we are going to be staying right there by the pier. Any suggestions on what kind of rig, for night, I should be using? Bait? Is the pier lighted and is there any cost to fish from it?
