| For all you guys who have kayaks. What kind of kayak do you prefer for yakking out baits. I'm in the market for one but want something that's going to be stable in the surf and something I can use on short trips in the bay. I'm looking to stay around 12'. I don't want anything too long. What would ya'll recommend? |

| I've been using my speck for paddling baits out, but it's really kind of long for surf yakkin. I think something in the 8-9 ft. range would give you much more control in the surf. |

| I have the Scrambler xt and the malibu 2.. For running baits in questionable surf the malibu2 is hands down the best for handling waves.. |

| OK Frenzy; stable, short(will turn on a dime, easy to transport),deep bow for handling heavy chop or large waves. The Frenzy will work as a bay fishing yak; however, it is slow, tracks poorly, and has limited cargo area. I would plan on getting one for each application. |

For a small yet stable yak to bust through the breakers to deploy baits and is light enough to lift on top of a SUV by one person then the OK Frenzy would be a good choice and the price is right. You can pick up a used one for around $250. It doesn't have a lot of room for BTB, however. If you are doing short bay runs then it would work out.
A Malibu II would be a good choice if you plan on mounting some rod holders and a tackle box (milk crate) for BTB or bay trips. All can be found used and in good condition if you look around.
Just depends on what you want to spend. _________________

Frenzy is the surf machine. Get the ocean kayak seat.

Drifters run the surf pretty well also & not bad in the bay. More storage at 12ft long. _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |

guys, I keep hearing these frenzys are slow for bay fishing. I realize they aren't as fast as a 15 foot boat... but how slow is "slow"?
Sorry to hijack here (but not really) I'd like to get something to throw in the boat to use instead of wadefishing some areas that have horrible bottoms.
would the frenzy be a good choice for that? |

To me the Frenzy is good for busting through the breakers. It is small and light weight which means it has great control in a tough situation. I would not want to be in it if I had a long paddle ahead of me. I like the Frenzy as I can load it up on teh SUV by myself and it is pretty light weight and easy handled. Now if I was going to be in the yak more than 30 mins and was planning on paddling a lot over a distance then I would move up to a larger more stable yak in the 11-12 foot range. The Frenzy has very limited areas where you can mount anything as far as rod holders and the like. However, I have taken my Frenzy to Canyon Lake and paddled around in the flat water for hours with no problems (two bass rods and a small tackle box). It can be done. At the same time, if I was planning on BTB or bay fishing for hours at a time the Frenzy wouldn't even be considered. I would go with something longer. _________________

I have an Ocean Caper and love it.
It's very easy to use in the surf and I fish the bays with it all the time.
It's 11' long and 31" wide so it's good and stable but I know what they mean when they say slow. Longer more narrow kayaks cut through the water faster with less effort.
One of the best things is that it's very reasonably priced.
Bought mine used fully loaded for $500. |
