Has anyone heard if they are planning on charging a ferry fee ? This guy here at work swears they are, I dont want to argue until I get some hard facts, and this is the place to get them. Very Happy

I haven't read anything in the South Jetty regarding a toll for the ferry's....I'm sure it would be there if there was. I know a couple years ago there was an application for a priority boarding pass....I don't know if TxDOT received enough applications to implement the program though.

A couple of years ago they were pushing to charge a fee along with an option for an annual pass that put you into a speed line for an express trip. Not sure why it fell apart, the cost was suppose to be $1.50 a car and $300 for the annual pass.

Three years ago the Legislature passed a bill that would allow the things you all are talking about. Here's the bill analysis:

And here's everything about the bill:

Can't see it happening for several reasons, first the bill reads that once the ferry is conveyed to the other party they become responsible for everything and all costs to operate and maintain. For Port Aransas to do this the fee would be so high nobody would pay it. Second, it states it has to be put to a public vote and I don't think people are going to vote to run a ferry that they have to pay for and will lose money. The city of Port Aransas needs to think up some other way to earn a dime because this one is retarded.

What about a bridge? I know the original reason for not building one, with the naval base and all. However, recently I heard talk of a bridge in the works. Any truth to it?

I don't think a bridge is planned. I heard it was to short a distance across for the hight it would have to be.

Plus it would put alot of people out of work since the rigs they build here around Ingleside have to cross the ferry crossing, and would not fit under a bridge.

I texted a friend of mine that works on a ferry about starting to charge a fee, He said "Not that I have heard of. Plus, we really don't have the infrastructure for that".

they can't build a bridge for the simple space factor. There is not enough island for the landing. Basically for the bridge too be high enough the landing would be just before the beach and that ain't gonna work. Now they could put a bridge that hooks a long way around but still the landing would be too far away from the business district and the height would still not be suitable for some of the structures going through the pass.

I say hell with it build an underwater tunnel that comes up just outside of town

the Galveston ferry is so much slower and does not seem nearly as efficient at the PA one. It took two hours to get across at 9:45pm last night.
