Thinking about getting one - advice?

I wanted to get a 2 seater, so me and a buddy could paddled a ways and wade fish - logical or not? I have used my Jon boat, that was scary, Shrimp Boat almost swamped me.

Can I rent one around there?

AND when is Croaker Season?

Jerry B's & Wind and Wave both rent yaks.

As far as two person on one yak, that would limit how much gear you can carry. You might look at buying used and maybe get two.
Check out texaskayakfisherman.com for lot's o info.

And as far as yaking to a wade destination, that's a great way to do it. You can anchor up or tie the yak to you and then wade from there.

OH and there is zero gasoline required for a kayak.

I agree with purchasing two kayaks instead of getting a two seater. I have a two seater and the issue with it is when you decide to go by yourself it's a handful. The wind will have its way with you. You will be alot happier with a one seater. I recomend renting prior to buying to make sure you are comfortable with the handling and performance of the different brands and models, than purchase one.

The Shrimp Boat Channel can get scary in a kayak even more in a two man I would think. I bet that jon boat crossing was pretty hairy.
One time, Kelle and I crossed back from LHL at the absolute worst time with the tide ripping out against a 30 mph ESE wind. The waves meeting the water going out cause two to three footers in there with a 5 knot current headed out. We made it okay but had to run 300 yards further east than we wanted to keep from turtling in those dangerous conditions. Wear a PFD.

If it was scary in a jon boat, it's gonna be even hairier in a kayak. I agree that two single seater might be the way to go. often times when I kayak w/ someone else we will end up a mile or more apart. It would be tough to cover this type of ground in a two seater.

the Malibu II kayak is the best in my opinion for 1, 2 or 3 seater (3 only with kids). When used as a 1 seater, an ice chest goes in one of the seats and that helps for balance. The Malibu II is pretty stable as well...we've taken them numerous times offshore to the near rigs on PINS.

Head over to www.texaskayakfisherman.com and do a search. When you're ready to buy, call Jerry B's.

Thanks guys, yes I was wondering about being alone in the wind.

Jerry B's - I'll come and see you - where are you located?

Mike S. - he is in track season, almost done - we will talk soon.

Are the back lakes better than just wading? Fishing season for me is on asap. Wink

Acadamy seems to have the lowest prices on kayaks. I have a Mainstream Kingfish that I bought from Academy for about $400. This kayak is great because it is really wide and on calm days I can stand on it and fish, ocean kayaks are great too but more expensive and so far the mainstream has been excelent. I would not go for a two person kayak it will be too difficult to fish out of, unless you just plan on kayaking to a spot and wade fishing then it might work out better to have a two person yak.

I just happen to know where you might get a Wilderness Tarpon 160i at a good price. Fixing to put it on the classified soon. Laughing
