i have a cabin on the icw(not floating) and i would like a light to catch trout with. it came with an underwater light but i didnt seem toattract fish after an hour. i am gonna try for longer but am i gonna need an above ground light???? if so how powerful?

I live on the cananls and have an underwater light that works like a champ. One hour is not enoguh time to tell if it works. My canal is probably deeper than the area you are putting your underwater light in, so I'm sure that may be a factor. I don't know much about the above water lights, but have fished under them at a floating cabin and they work good as well. I'm sure Topdog is right on about the wattage.

Well at the Landcut you almost have to use stadium lights. Not because of the water but that's what the other cabins and floaters are using and anything less doesn't stand a chance.

But, the issue may not be the lights. At the cabin I fish we need tidal movement preferrably out bound. And, the moon over head is a good predictor of success. I think shrimp move with the current and moonlight. On a new moon not much happens even with the stadium lights. I would keep trying the underwater lights under various conditions before giving up on them.

This last weekend we had NO moon and were fishing the cut and I have never in my whole life seen trout action like that! Stayed awake til 5 am and had to pull myself away from the action. Trout were pooping everywhere. We were using a green stadium light. The dock right next to ours had a regular light with not much action. What I didn't understand, where were the birds?????

i have allways used the over head 1000 watt stadium lights. right now i have a green bulb in it, but have also used a white bulb. the 2 main differences that i have seen between them is
1. the white bulb attracts two times as many insects. and
2. the bait you would use under the white light is not as affective under the green light.
you can use the same style of bait just gotta change colors.
if you are in corpus and your coming into corpus on 37 and then you exit onto spid and are headed for cross town expressway, there is a big electrical supply company right off of the excess road ( on the right side)and they sell the fixture, bulb and balast as a set. all you need to do is get a heavy mounting pole and wire. you can wire it either for 110 volts or 220 volts which ever you choose. all instructions come with it in the box.
i myself prefer the overhead light because the circumference of the lights beam is a lot more spread out than the undewater lights beam. hope this bit of info helps.

Any Idea on the spectrum of that bulb? Is It a HID(high intensity discharge) type bulb?


I have 3000 watts that I take out when we go night fishing but Mine are just halogen spotlights. They require no ballast and they are very narrow beam. I think they work pretty decent but I bet if I had just 1 - 1000 watt HID it would work as good as 3 1000 watt halogens..

The stadium light we use is a mercury vapor. Slow to warm up and has to cool down to restart. These are way different from the halogen fload/spot lights.
