Can one of you fellow posters help me out and tell me where I can find the area known as "the ditch"? Coordinates or some other frame of reference will work just fine. I appreciate it. _________________ Longhorn |

Thats just a nickname the old timers gave it, and it stuck. Kinda like the backyard. Its a man made cut in the earth. It just sounds better when men are talking...like. Where were you fishing? reply, I was was fishing the ditch. Sounds better than, I was fishing in the intracoastal waterway. the ditch just sounds salty. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

| The best adventure of my lifetime so far started through the ditch as I knew it in 19 78. I crewed on a 17 ton cutter to Ft. Myers FL. Mansfield pass was open then. No matter what, that boat only ever went 100 miles in 24 hours. I remember motoring through the pass at night and sailing out 100 miles when the north wind hit. Next thing I know, I was in 25 mph sustained winds, 25’ seas and it was 25 degrees. I will argue 25’ seas but the rest is a fact. Pure hell. 5 days and 500 miles strait south, sideways, we found ourselves in serious tropics. The wind turned and we sailed on the same tack for 7 days only running the motor a while at night to charge the batteries. I had the midnight to 8 am shift; I know, I kept that boat on 90 degrees strait as an arrow. I actually heard a shooting star. It came in right over us. I saw it then a few seconds later, I heard what sounded like the gas water heater starting up. We came upon a 75’ mast floating near Florida. Spent the day shopping for multiple wenches of every size, rigging, a few booms, and all the sail we could ever use. We reported it to the harbormaster in Naples. He hadn’t heard a thing. Seems like someone would notice if they were one 75’ mast short. Maybe not. When they get that big, they probably only ever motor around anyway. Whatever. If you are still with me here, you might wonder what Naples has to do with Ft. Myers. I am glad you read on. The destination was Ft Myers. We had no radar or GPS or whatever devise. Besides the compass, we had a sextant, a direction finder, and a tube with a ball in it and when you held it over the side, it would tell your speed; 3, or 4, or 5 mph. Right off the coast of Florida, the direction finder went out. We could see the lights of 3 cities on the horizon so we shot for the middle one and it was Naples. After 13 days out, we were ready for hard ground so we went to Naples for a few days where I met the woman I have been with for the last 30 years. Our first date was a day cruse from Naples to Ft Myers. I guess she thought I was wealthy. The only fish we caught were the flying fish that landed on the deck but it all started in the ditch. Thanks for reminding me about the ditch. L. |

the " ditch" also known as the "landcut" and connects the upper laguna madre to the lower laguna madre. it is part of the "intracoastal" water way system and is approx 24 miles long. it is approx 38 miles south of marker 37 and approx 22 miles north of port mansfield. hope this helps. _________________ I'VE NEVER HAD A BAD FISHING OR HUNTING TRIP, JUST ONES WITH DIFFERENT OUTCOMES. |

I think the Backyard is the Laguna Madre east of Flour Bluff or West of the Canals on Padre Island. It's in the backyard if you live there. _________________ Longhorn |
