I'm thinking about getting into kayak fishing. I have experience in a canoe, but none in a kayak. I found a used one that looks interesting to me and need some advice from the experts.

It is a 'Ocean Kayak" Ambush model. I know it's heavy (at 100#) but very stable looking. Set up with a moveable/removeable front seat, rear trolling motor mount and battery compartment, scuppers and a 6" access panel in the front. Reportedly has an 800# capacity. This might be important to me as I am 6'5" and 300# and could use the stability.

Seemed to be in good shape. Seller is asking $150 (boat only - no paddles). Does that seem like a fair price? Any suggestions or ideas would be helpful. Thanks!

That is a very heavy boat. There are some other Kayaks that you will like better. The Ambush is good for folks who want to duck hunt and haul decoys. If it has a troll motor on it you will need to get is registered and put numbers on it.

Stop by Jerry B's or Wind and Wave.

Jerry B's is having a demo day on March 15th

I agree that a demo days might be best for you so you can try out multiple kayaks. that said, $150 is a great price if the kayak is in good shape.

buy it heck at least you will have some sort of boat. Then you can look at some yaks that will better meet your needs. I always use ocean kayaks and currently have the prowler and it is good in the bays as well as 3+ miles off shore. I always go to wind and wave for my yaks they are a good price and the Jack the owner is a great guy nad will help you out for sure.
Good luck and if you buy it and want to sell it soonafter I might know some who would buy it from you.

Keep on fishing

we had an Ambush...great, sturdy kayak....used mostly for river running. My husband tried to take it off PINS but it is a tank. On the river, he can stand up in it without a problem. again, very sturdy.

We did sell ours though as we needed a faster boat.

100#'s is very heavy after 3 or more hours on the water,
you might want something lighter that you can load easier.

Yak fishing is great, there is no motor to break down, minimal clean up, and no registration, no trailer to breakdown, no flat tires.

it's a great way to fish

Thanks to all for your insight. I pondered on it overnight and then thought, "what the heck...I'll give it a shot. If it doesn't work out, I've already received 5-6 offers to purchase it from me. I figured it was a can't lose situation. I was wrong. I went back to pick it up this afternoon, and found out that it had sold this morning. Missed it by two or three hours.

I should have listened to my instincts that told me to "shoot first, ask questions later". I do sincerely appreciate the advice and suggestions on other options I might find more useful. You guys are great! I know I'll need help again in the future...till then I'll continue to lurk in the background and soak up all the experience I can get from your posts. Thanks again!

don't just lurk, share what you know so others may learn from you the same way you learn from them. what may seem useless, overpriced or wasted may be exactly what the next guy or gal needs but didn't want to ask.
