|
|
Tyler, Big John and all you surf fishermen and women,
That's my question, folks. I'm just getting into surf fishing and didn't know how many large rods, 12' to 13'6" long, a person could reasonably manage. I figured few had only one, and I have seen pictures where it looked like one person had 4 to 6 large rods in holders waiting for a strike. That makes sense to me, the more the better, but what do you do if you get 4 strikes at the same time?
Thanks,
Ray _________________ Ray |

make a couple of rod-holders out of 1.5 in. PVC and use whatever rods you have. maybe one surf-rod to start with. length helps in distance casting and to keep your line up off the bars. the more rods out, the more you'll run amonst them ckecking them. depends on how busy you like to be. don't buy a bunch of expensive rods untill you get a few surf trips under your belt. remember, years ago, they caught lots of fish with cane poles. I just started to use an old cane pole this year, a calcuta. It is long and works great with a 6/0! |

My long rods wont fit in 1.5in PVC pipe, have to use 2in pipe for the holders. _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |

If 1.5in PVC pipe doesn't work, then I would look torwards another methed/design of rod holders. From experience 2in PVC pipe is much harder to drive into the sand, then again you could dig a hole to set the rods.

GO TO THE ROD THAT IS BENT MORE, PERSONALLY I USE FIVE REELS, TWO IN THE SECOND GUT, AND TWO PAST THE THIRD. AND ONE SMALLER REEL TO FISH IN THE FIRST GUT. NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH PVC ROD HOLDERS AS LONG THAT IT HAS A 45 ANGLE CUT ON IT. JUST GET CLOSE TO WATER STICK PVC IN SAND AND PUSH DOWN AND MOVE ROD HOLDER BACK AND FOURTH AT THE SAME TIME, ROD HOLDER WILL START SINKING IN WITH NO PROBLEM. NO HAMMER NEEDED,WORKS ON ANY WIDTH.ALSO DEPENDS IF THERE IS GRASS OR WEED IN WATER TO DECIDE HOW MANY RODS YOU CAN MANAGE.

Typically I run out one for me and one for the wife out into the second or thrid gut. Then I set up one 9 foot rod each for us closer in in either the first or second gut. Then we each have one we hold that we use for lures and close in.
The four big rods sit in pole holders made by simply cutting a 45 degree angle on the bottom of 2" heavy grade PVC, in 5 foot lengths, and driving them 2 foot into the sand with a rubber mallet. Super easy and cheap, and they hold better then any other design we have tried.
I agree that more than two lines out per person is too much work, though I know people who will run three and four per person.
Good luck and tight lines! _________________ GOBZA!!!

My 12' Ocean Masters will not fit in 1 1/2" pipe...sorry...tried that one night and 40 bucks later from a day back and forth from Home Depot to my shop to build the ultimate surf rod rack....The 1 1/2 was only big enough to hold my trout rods...best to go 2" in the back of the truck!

Dont get me wrong here....I believe it was 1 1/2 inch pipe...I chose the cheaper stuff ....2" seemed too large, but boy did I learn my lesson....I use only 2" as sand spikes as well.... |
