A friend asked if I wanted some trout that he had caught from a spring fed pond in Oklahoma over the Thanksgiving holidays. I said sure and he gave me two large baggies full which I thought there were 6 or 8 in each one. To my surprise, there were 3 in each bag. Cleaned they were 14” so they must have been 16” or 18”. My friend said they stocked the pond in September. Is it possible they grew to that size in 3 months? Would you look at the girth on that thing? Needless to say, they were wonderful. |

| speaking of trout, I think they may be about to stock some rainbows down here in selected sites.....anyone have the scoop on that? I know the Guadalupe and a few others, but don't they stock an area in Lake Mathis and maybe Waldron pond? |

| Yes in the right conditions (little heat stress) they can and will grow to that size from 8 = 10 " fish. Feed them and keep the current moving they will get even bigger. |

I've lived in Colorado my whole life and have caught a fair number of rainbows. I've never heard of a trout growing from 10" to 16" in three months... I've always heard about 1-2" a year, in good conditions. I've also seen trout that are stunted - big heads with little bodies - because there isn't enough to eat.
Maybe the place where you're buddy was fishing has the prefect nutrient mix, and the fish are growing at astronomical rates. Or, more likely, they are stocking 16-18" fish up there. In Missouri, i've caught stocker rainbows that were about 16" and straight from the hatchery. I'm not sure what size Rainbows they stock down here, but I bet the fish you're buddy caught were large stockers. |

| I got more information this morning at work. Jp3, you are right. They buy these fish by the pound full grown and have them delivered in September. They feed them Purina fish food, catch, and eat fresh fish ‘till they’re gone. |

| Looks like the ones TU puts in the Guadalupe. The one that survive the fishing season to the next year their flesh turns ornage instead of white/grayish like the fresh stockers. I'll try to post up some pics as I'm going down there soon. |

| Check out what the Arkansas Game and fish commission has done on the White and Little Red Rivers in Arkansas. They have developed a world class trout fishery because they have developed a world class habitat. Given the right conditions fresh water trout, specifcily German Browns and Rainbows can and do make unbelievable growth gains in short periods of time. The best example I can think of is right here in our back yard - south texas trophy bucks. |
