Went to Hopewell lake in Northern New Mexico today. Got there about 9:30 and fished until a little after 1:00. The temperature when we got there was 66° and made it all the way up to 81. Elevation of the lake is about 9,800 ft. Was throwing one of my go to lures for up here, a Joe's fly. It is a spinnerbait with a fly attached to it. I wound up catching and releasing 21 rainbow trout. Crazy thing was three people to my left caught a total of two fish and two people to my right also got a total of two fish. After having some lunch I decided to grab my fly rod and do a little fly fishing to see you what I can catch. I put a dry fly with a bead head nymph dropper on it and I wound up catching four more rainbows on it. Had a blast today.
About 15 mi Northwest of the lake for the last 2 weeks there has been a big forest fire. The fire has consumed over 8,700 acres but as of today it was about 85% contained. Being that it was a close proximity to the lake, fire trucks and tankers were coming over to the lake and using a pump to pump water out and fill up the trucks to take it back to fight the fires.
