This weekend will be a year when a great morning on the water tuned bad.
All was well heading at first light down the inter coastal to Baffin. Fish in the box and then around noon starting filling really hot and uncomfortable. My buddy's said i looked like i was in destress. Then it was time to find a/c/ fast and get out of the boat. I had thought i had drank plenty of water overnight and hit gateraid that morning. But also consumed lots of coffee before throwing lines. then a few Miller lites. Sooo I don't fish in August anymore because i had a heat stroke. Made it back and down more gateraid but i got chills even with covers on, bad headache, and sore muscles.
Be careful this time of year fish early head back in by noon and watch the beer consumption friends. |

Glad you got home OK.
I thought it was just me, being a newby down here..
I'm having a horrible time with this heat/humidity.
Agreed, coffee really cranks up my body temp, gonna have to stop drinking it until fall I guess _________________ Steve-O

| I was at fish pass jetty with my son and all of a sudden I started feeling a little woozy. Told him we need to get back to the truck and into the ac. It seemed like it was a long way back legs were getting tired and muscles were sore. Got back drank a bunch of water I was sitting in the AC and everything was okay. Temperature gauge in my truck showed was 109 in the sand |

I have had a couple of heat issues in the last 6 years, but they have all been when i went out before dawn, to fish the surf until tide change or whatever. I have not had a heat issue when i have gone out in the afternoon, and fished through dark. The difference is fishing the surf in the morning, the sun is in my face until early afternoon, fishing the second half of the day, the sun is to my back. I wear long sleeve white shirts that are supposed to be reflective, which is probably helpful.
Also, I carry several containers of cold water in which i have poured Propel. I hit that stuff pretty hard on my trips down pins.
Facing the sun for 8 to 10 hours versus the sun at my back for 8 to 10 hours seems to make a difference. Or I am lucky, which I doubt. _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy. |

| No doubt scary, and I'm glad all of you lived to tell about it. The coffee and alcohol can definitely add to the problem. I've learned to keep coconut water handy, because it will replenish your electrolytes better then anything else available to us. Also, keeping one of those synthetic towels in your cooler and putting it behind your neck to cool the blood going to your brain will help when you are in a high heat situation. |

| What I find it helps replenish electrolytes and helps me recover faster when I'm working out in the sun is tonic water. It has quinine in it and that works real well. |

Since I've never drank Tonic water I decided to google it and found the following:
"According to medical professionals, quinine should not be taken by people suffering from low blood sugar, abnormal heart rhythms, kidney disease, or liver disease. It is also very bad for pregnant mothers. Coincidentally, people suffering from these conditions should not be drinking either." There was a statement on there referencing the negative effect of the use of tonic water with quinine if one is taking coumadin (warfarin), because it increases the chances of bleeding.
I think I will stick to my coconut water, since I have an abnormal heart rhythm and take a blood thinner. |

I noticed as I get older I have more issues with the heat we have been experiencing. One of the issues I experience after a day on the water is hand cramps. I have found that the bottles of pickle juice that heb sells helps an awful lot for this issue. You can also get packets of Pedialyte powder that mix in a 16-20 ounce bottle of water and help a lot.
Best thing is LOTS of water. |
