oh yeah, and Tyler has a 16' Whaler Montauk laying around in a yard in the back of the bluff somewhere that needs a little TLC that would be IDEAL for doing exactly that....

I did the TPWD hatchery tour in Flour Bluff several years ago.
They stated that there were distinctive DNA differences in trout south of the Laguna Madre and those north of it. When i asked about surf runners they said that they were not well understood but they were different as well and they had different genetic markers from the other two.
Just stating what the TPWD biologists said.
This was probably 8 years ago so perhaps they have learned something since. _________________ The entertainment is cheap, . . . It's the price of admission that gets you. |

I remember getting the call from Billy when he found out the Harte Institute was going to do this study. He made it very clear I was to drop everything and hit the beach with himself and David Rowsey to, as he always put it, "go on a mission". For 2 days the 3 of us grinded and I believe we caught 21 over 24" for the study. It was quite the operation as the research team brought trucks down the beach with water tanks in the back to do the procedure on the trout inserting the trackers in the body cavities. They would put them in the tank and after 20 minutes if they looked good they would put them back in the surf. Because the trout were over 24" it ensured they were all females. I believe the idea was to see if these trout entered a bay system at any point to lay their eggs. Billy swore that they would lay them in the 50's on PINS in the guts with the shell bottoms.
As far as if the freeze effected the trout population in the surf. The trout started showing up about 3 weeks ago. Just went through my logs and we have caught 28 so far during that time period. None of them were under 23" with the biggest being 28". The spring time trout tend to be of the larger variety but this year seems to be well above the average. I'm eager to see what the trout bite will be like this summer when the average usually goes to 18-19 inches. Jeff Wolda |
