I had been watching the surf all week, saw a window Saturday morning to take my shallowsport offshore and conditions actually held this time. Picked up 3 dozen piggies, some squid and shrimp and we were off. Hit some close rigs about 5 miles out and dropped baits. Didnt take long for my buddy from El Paso to get hooked up.

41" Bull Red

Caught some bigger piggies at the rig, dropped em back down and soon after got another one.

38" Bull Red

After that the big baits went untouched and it was all out sand trout madness. The piggies we bought were being demolished about as fast as you could drop them. We ran out, switched to shrimp, squid, or cut bait, didn't matter. They were chewing. We were keeping fish for my buddy from El Paso so quickly filled up the cooler. And got a red snapper as a bonus.

Ended up with 38 sand trout and the snapper for him to haul back home!

Not a bad trip at all!

Little video of the action and conditions...

that a lot of fillet work - great report and photos

I remember as a teenager, running out of bait and catching more sand trout on cut sand trout.

those sandies fry up just fine...people don't keep them because they get mushy when you freeze them....its true, when you freeze them in water like we all used to...nowadays, freeze them in your vacuum sealer without water and they do great...

surprised you didn't get any surprise pompano out there doing that...

Ya, we vacuum sealed them. That's the only way to go now. Not only does it keep the fish every bit as good, but they for in the freezer so much better flattened out. I don't know why I didn't get one sooner!

I was hoping for pomps but the sand trout were so thick I don't think anything else had much of a chance!
