Headed down PINS 11/06 - 11/08 for the weekend with plans to get some big baits out and while trying to get some reds and trout in close. On Saturday, we were running the beach and came upon a nice little hole in close and slung some mullet out to try out luck. Weeding through the skippies I eventually land what I thought was a slot red, but ended up being my first Snook! Measured her at 24" and started getting her back in to the water.
At this time, she decided to release herself and flopped around in my hands before falling back in the wade gut to swim off. During her aerobatics she cut my hand a little but I didn't pay much attention to it. Apparently, she had also punctured the inside of my right pinky at the knuckle but I didn't notice it.
Fast forward to Monday and my pinky starts to swell up to the point of discomfort. I go to bed with the intention of going to an Urgent Care first thing in the morning. When I woke up Tuesday I had pain in my wrist to my elbow and a nice red streak to go along with it. I make it to the Urgent Care on SPID next to Best Buy where they call in a prescription of two antibiotics and send me on my way.
With the doctor being a bit nonchalant about it I really wanted a second opinion. That afternoon I headed to Surepoint on the Island where Dr Dorrell immediately admitted me to the ER and began IV Fluids and antibiotics over the next three hours. During this time he also set up an appointment for me the next day at South Texas Bone and Joint to have a surgeon take a look. Dr Thomas immediately decides that it is very infected and set me up for surgery the following morning.
I write this to remind everyone that bacteria is in our waters and to please not take it lightly. Luckily they were able to get all of the infected tissues after knocking me out and filleting open my finger but a little more care on my part at the end of my fishing day could have gone a long way in the damage. They took a culture and I will update this when they tell me what the results are but right now they are thinking Staph. Had it been Vibrio this would have been much, much worse. Please keep Hibiclens in your truck, tackle bag, boat, etc and make sure to use it!

I believe that it is the Penn Carnage 2 - 8', 15-30#, 0.75-3 oz paired with a Shimano Sahara 4000 with 30# braid. Absolutely love this combo for the surf and jetties. _________________ -Pat |

Congrats on the snook. I've caught them on the rocks but never in the surf and never quite that big!
That finger looks nasty! Glad you got a second opinion from someone who knows what they are doing. |

| I was just re-reading your post and it reminded me of my daughter getting staph in her shoulder, as a result of eating squid calamari at a party. The pain was over whelming and were it not for the second or third doctor she went to recognizing her symptoms she may have died in short order. I had no ideal one could get staph from eating anything! |

Sorry for your medical issue but also I say nice catch.
I just remembered that when I got the new truck I tossed my old first aid kit thinking everything was out dated. And dumb me I have not replaced it yet. Due to your miss fortune I will shop tomorrow for a new one. |

Great job on the snook!
Glad you got a second opinion. Alot of those Urgent Cares are a mill for insurance claims. More money in quantity over quality. _________________ Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. |

Great Snook Dude, What did he hit on ?
Dr. Dorrel knows what he is doing. I got bit by a coyote and he did the same thing sending ne to that specialist. They first thought i might lose use of two fingers because of infection, but keep holding it in a solution a few times a day and took high power antibiotics for the bad infection.
I also waited a few days, and that was wrong. You got to go see the Doc. fast when anything starts turning Red and swells, A.S.A.P. |
