Driving north on 37 out of CC Sunday we saw a flock of 4 green tropical birds that looked very much like parrots. The wife and I both saw it and were rested and sober, so nothing crazy happening. Is there a population of these down that way? Austin has a parakeet population that I have seen, but there were much larger.

Yes, there is a population of them. I work around the refineries and see them all the time. There are some fairly large flocks over there too

Absolutely yes. There is a fairly large population of them in the trees around our admin bldg parking lot of off I-37 & Up River Rd.. Years ago, my good friend lived on Annaville road had quiet a few in his neighborhood trees. While parking under the trees in our south Texas heat sounds great, it really is not in the area around the parrots! Just saying..........cC

I believe they are Green parakeet's. We are in there northern most area of their range. If you go to West Guth Park you have a good chance at running into a couple large Flocks.

Probably Monk Parakeets. We have a lot of them in Austin. They are the only parrots that build a stick nest. Look for the nests on utility poles or cell phone towers.

That's what they are. They have lived on the city's North side for years and are slowly spreading across town. There are a bunch around the Del Mar west campus, and I've heard them near Carroll high school recently. They're distinctive and pretty cool birds.

Red-crowned parrots are native to Texas, and were likely pushed further south than Corpus Christi by farmers to prevent them from eating crops. A thesis from Southwest Texas State Uvsty studied historical reports of them as far north as Victoria.

original range can be seen here:

https://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/red-crowned-parrot

and here is a TPWD article:

Yup, Monk Parrots are not uncommon on the West side. I've seen them at Salinas Park / Lozano Golf Course a few times. Even had one hang out on the telephone pole behind my house off Alameda and Doddridge while I was doing yard work a few months ago.

The most that I have seen was at Charlie's Place off 37 and McBride Ln when I was asked to price out a new parking lot for the place. There had to be at least 50 hanging out on the power lines.

My mom has had a Double Yellow Headed parrot since before she and my dad even met. Bubba is probably around 40 years old now. Once my sister and I were born he was no longer the baby and has completely resented us since. Once I heard that flock of parrots barking away I knew immediately what they were. I'm emotionally scarred from that bird.

Yes, we have a colony in Austin, they nest in the softball field light towers. Pretty cool to see a flock of them picking thru the grass looking for seeds.
