I am hearing reports of a fish kill in Port A off Sandcastle.
Anybody hear reports of aerosols?

Spend a couple of hours going down the beach from Caldwell to Fish Pass. There is a bloom in the Gulf, but it is NOT 'that which shall not be mentioned'. Came across a scattering of menhaden, a trout, and a gafftop, very low bird activity, and general malaise towards Port A. By the time you get to Marker 70 or so, down the beach, the surf looks wonderful.
If I had to hazard a guess, it looks like a phytoplankton bloom in the nearshore that is drawing down the dissolved oxygen levels at night, with the low wind and hot conditions now. There will be a meter hung off Caldwell early tomorrow morning to try and confirm.
Mainly menhaden, 5-6 inch, and scattered. Birds took care of most of them.
Will report back tomorrow. |

At the end of Caldwell Pier, the dissolved oxygen level was normal, top to bottom. As you head inshore, the levels drop dramatically, and the color becomes more and more stained. Very low at the beach, and some scattered fresh dead menhaden along the shore.
Previous water samples under a scope showed it is a diatom bloom, and more were taken today to see if it's the same organism.
Lets get the wind blowing and get this mixed out of the surf.

As of last Friday, it had moved as far south as the Packery basin, and there were dozens and dozens of pelicans feeding on the fish. Wasn't much on the beach.
Saturday and Sunday, it showed up in gangbusters down to Fish Pass, with a steady line of menhaden for miles. Sunday, the same thing from the State Park to Packery. Then, BAM! come Tuesday, the tide dropped and I couldn't find even an old carcass, anywhere. Zero fish from Bob Hall to the PINS sticks.
Yesterday was similar, nothing of note, and with the extra storm surge, I imagine the beach has been cleaned. Still nothing in the water samples other than a Diatom bloom, and the stained water of the surf can't be found.
So, I'd say it has run its course. |
