I wont be much help, but I did read that Evinrude will be no more. BRP is gonna stop production on them completely. Don't rule out Tohatsu though. Real good motors. _________________ I like fishies |

I've got a shallowsport I can give you a test ride on after all the covid crap. It's a little rough in some heavy chop but I still take it out in 20 plus mph winds. It's really all about how you angle into it. I also have a yamaha 115 on it. Let me know. _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

| I've never owned any of the hulls you've listed, but if it were me I would not take anyone's advice, because there is nothing like personal experience of riding on the hull of your choice. There are demonstrations available in some cases and then you might find a friend, guide, etc. with a suspect hull you might be interested in. Etek, as said, is no more. My last four engines have been Yamaha and I have nothing negative to say about them, but if I were going to buy a new engine I think I would at least give Mercury, an American made engine, a good look before making my decision. BTW, I've never owned or wanted a Mercury, but keeping the money in the USA is important, especially today. Enjoy what ever you buy! |

Well i appreciate your advise, but this will be number 24 boats that i have owned. I am 63 years young. My dad a me actually built a 32 " boat in Aransas pass . Started with the stem on 55 gallion barrels inverted, and went to Stuart & Stevens for the Perkins Diesel engine. Big day when we hoisted it down below and installed the ss shaft, gear box.
The last shallow boat was a 20" Gulf Coast. Loved this boat with tunnel and jack plate. I fish alot to with a friend in Seadrift with his cat 22 " Shoalwater. She gets up in a foot of water doing 2 circles. Dang you got to love to fish spending mega dollars to buy. Chris has been a along time friend at Hayne. We use to pre fish tourneys. He was and still is a hard worker him and Bryan to take a old hull and modify to the orginal Bigfoot and beyond. He just always wants to stick a mecury on the transom. I an ot a fan of Mercs. |

In my opinion, the latest cat hulls are the best compromise between performance in choppy water and performance in shallow water. I purchased a used Shoalwater 23' cat around Thanksgiving 2018, and have absolutely loved it. The cat hull isn't going to perform like a deep V in the chop, but it's not bad, and compared to the flat bottom tunnel hull I had before, it's a huge improvement. Regarding shallow water performance, I became directionally challenged at one time and took the wrong inlet into a back lake (the right inlet has a 3-4' channel, not so much on the other ones) and fortunately the tide was high that day so we had about 12" of water. With the motor jacked up and the trim tabs down, we sailed right through without even digging anything up on the bottom. The Haynie cat hull looks pretty similar, so I imagine I would probably love that one as well, but I had the same objection to the Mercury motor as you - I don't think they're very reliable, so didn't want to purchase one. In general, you're not going to do better than either Yamaha or Suzuki. The reason I didn't go with Majek was because they didn't have a cat hull like Shoalwater or Haynie that performed as well - they seemed to me at the time to be more geared towards flat bottom designs. I hear great things about Majek as well, so I'm not bad mouthing them - it just wasn't the best fit for me.
My $0.02, for what it's worth. |

Yes i think that is going to be the new rig in the very near future. Shoalwater 22 " cat makes a very nice cat hull. I have a bud that i fish with down in Sea drift that has one and its got a lot going for it. He also like dealing with Waypoint Marine in Corpus. I also like to see the gas tank under the console instead of under the deck. Tunnels, dont think i want one again. Hard backing up in a crowded dock like Clems or Marker 37 during a busy weekend.
Suzuki 175 or 200 4 stroke appears to have better pricing. Guys that i ask that push one always say no issues. My son runs the hell out of Hondas in the Coast Guard and likes them, but i just dont like the way they look and well spending a bucket full of money got to be happy. |

Not to steal the thread (bc my dad might be interested in the one you're selling), but weren't Johnson & Evinrude under the same umbrella at one point or another? I only ask because he mentioned this to me as a youngster, and said that those were the only two brands he'd buy. It seems like Evinrude got sold to BRP at some point, who's mother company makes Bombardier and *ahem* "A220" *ahem* aircraft, but what is the status on Johnson? _________________ All things will pass. Evinrude and Johnson were both owned by OMC when BRP Bought them out they dropped the Johnson brand a few years after. _________________ I like fishies |

I remember OMC name, too. So Johnson is now stand-alone? _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |
