My 9 year old grandson just got this fish to put in his aquarium that he started. I'm not absolutely sure what it is and don't want to give him misinformation.

Well, at first I thought maybe a juvenile grouper of some sort .... Nasau? But looking at the vertical bands and the tail it looks like maybe a juvenile Sheepshead.

Not real sure on anything though.

Maybe, if you can get it to smile you can determine if it's a sheephead? Laughing

Was going to sit back and watch the guesses roll in, but it got ID'ed pretty quickly. Looks like a small sheepshead to me.

Question though, where did it come from? Local or somewhere else, because there is supposedly a sub-species found in FL with a different number of vertical bars along the side that we get here.

The only two fish in our waters with a vertical stripe with a body shape like the one shown is either a sheepshead or a black drum, as far as I can recall. Maybe it only has vertical stripes, as a juvenile?

Here is a link for sheepshead: https://txmarspecies.tamug.edu/fishdetails.cfm?scinameID=Archosargus%20probatocephalus

And black drum: https://txmarspecies.tamug.edu/fishdetails.cfm?scinameID=Pogonias%20cromis

Could it be a young tripletail? https://txmarspecies.tamug.edu/fishdetails.cfm?scinameID=Lobotes%20surinamensis

Judging by the mouth it looks like a sheepshead. Get a pic of the teeth and you will know for sure.

Not a sheepshead. Compare Zia's last picture to the three fish species I posted above. Note the dorsal fin flares out only like the triple tail. It looks nothing like the sheepshead or black drum.

I agree with ratherbefishing as it is not a sheepshead or drum. Dorsal fins are much different. The head seems to be different from a triple tail adult

After further searches of fish pics, I to agree with the sheepshead vote. The TAMU picture is of a very mature sheepshead.

That's interesting. I've had baby drum, pinfish, sheep and pigfish in my aquarium, and none of them looked like that. Now I'm curious... how long is this fish?

Turns out it was a sheepshead. Here's what it look like there for a few days in the aquarium
