So this weekend I got a couple cownose ray halfs out about 400 yards or so and both times got cut off. I feel pretty crappy about leaving a half a ray with hooks and a weight hooked to it out there. I have read about braid getting cut off on here before but I used the search and couldnt find it. Im running 100lb suffix and 130lb mono leader. Wondering if I should switch to 100lb mono and have a 300-400 yard top shot instead of 100 yards?
Also I have seen guys who have bright colored floats hooked to there shark baits so if they get cut off they can paddle out and retrieve them. I have googled this and havent come up with any good info. Again I feel crappy about leaving hooks bait and a weight out there to hook and kill a shark or any other fish by accident. |

No crappier than the dozens of abandoned, chopped up cownose rays I came across from Access Rd. 6 to the Sticks yesterday.
But then again, it happens every 'C'harkathon....... You can count on it. Like you can set your watch that the weather will be crappy for that weekend..... It's almost like 'somebody' is saying, "Enough is Enough". |

yes, if you're running large gear you should be using a float, no doubt....
there's a myriad of things you can be using, from crab trap floats to 2-Liter bottles with cyalume sticks in them....the point is to use SOMETHING that way you can retrieve your derelict gear...

| my buddy last weekend was chasing a bobber in Talley Island sloughs - certainly a broken-off red - but could never catch it or hook the leader. |

I used the float method. I had a large orange float with about 20 feet of 400# mono crimped to a snap swivel that I would clip to to the same swivel I tied my main line to. I'd roll it up and take it with me when paddling out a bait because the float will cause extra drag when trying to get over the bars in rough surf. Then as I dropped the bait I'd clip it to the swivel. I didnt bother with a light or reflective tape. If it broke over night, I'd paddle out the next morning and re tie. A little bit of a pain but worth the hassle. Also, you can easily check your bait, or remove weight, so it's not as much of a pain to crank in from 400+ yards out. _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

^x2 from what Hick and Becky said about floats. On any bait taken out a good distance it really is ideal.
As far as cutoffs on your 100# braid go, it could be something as simple and annoying as just a bad spool of line or fishing swimming through and biting you off or rubbing on the sand bar. I've had it happen on 250# braid on the same trip that my 65# braid held up just fine. i have 5 year old 100# powerpro that is still in great shape and has outlasted 150# powerpro on a different reel. _________________ -Pat |

Floats help keep the braid from chafing on the sandbars.
Ribbonfish often bite braid. _________________ Take it outside! |
