Looking into getting a pair soon. What brand or style should I look at? Rarely get to fish in the winter but making time now to do so. In the summer I just jump in LOL.
Should I look at ones with boots already attached or separate? _________________ Shane |

If you have the $, I would definitely recommend Simms brand.
Frogtoggs is not bad either and a little more affordable.
I would not get ones with the boots attached as they do not have much structure and will squeeze the crap out of your feet.
Your basic neoprene boots will do the same thing, so I would spend the money to get a sturdy pair of wading boots. _________________ May God Bless Us All |

| Just bought a pair of Frogg Toggs as my Christmas present to self and wore them out in the surf the other day with just a pair of shorts underneath them. Worked fine. and if you check online right now you can get them for about half price. In the surf all I wore was Crocs as my shoes however if I was actually wade fishing in the Laguna or someplace I would definitely get a good pair of wading shoes |

Thoughts on waders...
Get the stocking foot waders. Try them on before buying. They should be loose and shouldn't restrict movement.
Before buying boots try them over the waders. The neoprene stocking on the waders takes up room and sometimes there is excess stocking. I also wear a liner sock inside my waders. I don't go by boot sizes, I find the boot that fits. Can be two sizes bigger than your usual shoe size.
You can use your boots all year, with or without waders. Find some neoprene socks for wet wading - I like the Hodgeman socks because they are about the same thickness as my stocking foot.
H-back suspenders have failed me. Nothing worse than the suspender slipping off your shoulder all day long.
Most leaks happen on the seams which are hard to impossible to make a permanent repair. Seams are everywhere; seams on the legs, seams in the stockings, seams at the connection to the stockings. Once a leak starts usually more will follow. This is what mainly separates good waders from cheap. I don't think I have ever noticed a difference in breathability of different breathable technologies. Better quality will also have more layers, better fit, better construction particularly at stress and high wear points.
I keep a pair of full neoprene for the worst of conditions. You will suffer getting into them, trying to move in them, and they trap sweat and moisture inside. One extremely crapy winter day I rode in front of the console down to Baffin in a pair of neoprenes and a good wade jacket and was amazingly comfortable. They are stocking foot as use the same pair of boots.
Depending on how often you use your waders kind of dictates the quality you need. Simms are guide quality. You might get a couple of seasons out of a pair of Academy brand if going out a couple times a month. A strategy that worked for me was to buy a cheap pair and then watched for close out deals at online fly shops for an upgrade. _________________ kick your shoes off and cast a line |

| Just a note, if you paint your waders with Thompson's water seal it's possible to plug some of the smaller annoying seam leaks. |

John, do you recommend the Cedar tint or the Autumn Brown for the job? _________________ kick your shoes off and cast a line |

I would be tempted in the surf to wear a full dry suit (maybe 2pc), but breathable waders make all the difference compared to other choices, and Goretex performs far ahead of imitations.
I've pretty much fished through all of them including Simms Guide over 40 years, even busting brush in Alaskan rain forest, and Patagonia are my next favorite for comfort, with the exception of my favorite Cloudveil guide weight
- I'm happily still fishing my Cloudveil, but unfortunately Cloudveil got out of the wader business -
if either of these on ebay fit you, I would grab them
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2499334.m570.l1313.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xcloudveil.TRS0&_nkw=cloudveil&_sacat=177876
they're only mediums and larges in regular lengths
For my kayak, I recently picked up some Kokatat goretex dry pants with built in goretex socks (instead of neoprene) - they fit narrow kayak-footwell-size shoes, and feel like regular clothes. |

I've never had a good experience with waders lasting very long. Since we have such a short winter, and unless you fish a lot in the first winter and get the value out of them in one year, it seems they have a leak by the time you want to use them the next winter. I have a pair of Simms I bought a couple of years ago, but then had an ankle injury which required med attention, so I'm almost afraid to try them out. If the never used Simms leak I'm going to be a very disappointed Simms customer! |
