I would imagine the fact they lace all the way to the toe helps with the traction and control of the foot's movement in the shoe, much like a roofer's boot. Thanks for the suggestion, this shoe might be the answer for me in a boat shoe. I wore these, as a kid, and used to use the US Kid low quarter lace up for a boat shoe, but an ankle injury has caused me to search for something fitting around the ankle and a brace, so Chuck Taylor's high quarter might be the answer for me.

yup...good solid ankle support.....they also have non-marking soles, so as long as you don't drag mud into the boat with you, they keep the boat pretty clean...

they also grip the barnacles on the rocks like champions, much better than silly old golf shoes...

Take it from someone that learned the painful hard way that golf shoes with soft spikes don't work. I almost broke a rib or two a couple years back at Packery and still had pain six months later. It was the hardest fall I have ever had, and I am 6'6" and a bit clumsy, so I can tell ya about falls.

I normally wear Crocs Swiftwater sandals, and they have worked pretty well.
