I want to put together a rig for throwing heavy spoons and plugs off the jetties.

Right now I use a Ambassadeur 6500 but it's just a little light for the heavier plugs. I could go up to a 7000 but I'm not sure that is really much of a size difference. Must have greater capacity than the 6500 and a fast gear ratio. I'll be using braid. Anything out there from say, Diawa or Shimano? If anyone is as ripe as I am and remember the old Penn Surfmasters that would be about the perfect size.

I'm also cheap so no $300 reels please. Embarassed

Akios makes a 757 cs caster . 5.5:1 ratio. Probably same size as a 7000. May be worth a look.

Daiwa cvz 300 or Penn Mag 525.
Or whatever the current model of those are.
The Daiwa has levelwind, Penn doesn't.
I have both and both are excellent.

Checkout Daiwa Lexa or Shimano Tranx low profile. I've been eyeing Daiwa Lexa 400XS-P. Both should hold a good amount of braid.

I had both the 300 and 400. Got rid of the 400 because it felt a bit bulky for what I wanted. If you want something bigger than a 6500 you will have to go with the 400 though. The 300 will hold a couple hundred yards of 30# braid which is enough for any king or jack.

Great thing about the 300 is its light and comfortable enough to throw lures for trout but heavy enough to stop jacks with 22 pounds of drag.

When I got rid of the Lexa 400 I picked up a Quantum Iron PT 300 with a power handle. It is slightly larger than the Lexa 300 and makes 24 pounds of drag. I spooled that one with a couple hundred yards of 40# braid and it is on a much stiffer rod than the Lexa.

The Lexa 300 setup is for 1/2-2.5 ounces and the Quantum 300 is for 2-6 ounces. Have not had the Quantum long (1 season) so we will see how it holds up.

Thanks guys, but some of you are way too rich for me.

I went with this one after cruising thru the east coast striper fishing boards. 300yds of 30lb braid and a 5:2 retrieve.

I have the Tica Caiman. You should be happy with it. It won't cast with the NLW reels, but does pretty well with a bunch of weight. They're very well made, and should last.

Your selection just reminded me of another option on a budget reel...The Shimano TR200G. Level wind, star drag, graphite body, round baitcaster. Casts pretty decent and holds up pretty well. I have one of those too but I don't use it for casting much anymore. Shifted it to a snapper and kingfish reel.
