AI'm boatless at the moment so I went out EARLY this morning, watched a nice sunrise. Water had some pretty large swells but very little if any current. Nice healthy green color. Not a single fish to be seen though.
Tossed out some frozen mullet and started casting a Gotcha plug. I worked away until my shoulder quit, only getting skunked.
Nothing hit the mullet either. Traded the bait out for a less soggy one a couple of times but no hits. For a weekend the place was practically vacant. I think there weren't more than a dozen guys fishing up until I left at noon. Switched locations all up and down the pier.
Tried to catch a perch or two for live bait and could not find any of those around the pilings either. Its very odd, I ALWAYS catch at least trash fish of some sort.
There was couple down from me using that store-bought catfish blood bait. I don't know if I've stumbled onto some great secret or just a clueless tourist. |

HEH! Reminds me of the time I saw an older fella at the end of one of the motel piers in Rockport using chunks of hot dogs for bait! _________________ "Money will buy you a fine dog, but only love can make him wag his tail." - Kinky Friedman

Both of those I have used...for catfish...in FRESH water...and they did work (sometimes).
Never heard of anyone using either in salt water though. I never thought to try since they're both "catfish" baits in fresh I figured they'd just be a one way ticket to hardhead hell in the salt. Hey, but maybe a nice gafftop would hit it? I dunno.
Yes, if I'm not getting any perch hits when I go out, even if I'm not catching anything else, I know something is wrong. Makes me wonder with Caldwell being closed all that time (and also no telling what Harvey did UNDER the water line), if the fish gave up on it as a feeding area. Only way to get them back is for all of us to soak some bait consistently though.
Or it could just be conditions. Lack of current is always a yellow flag. Perhaps I'm overthinking. I may go out there this morning since I haven't slept well tonight. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |
