What power surf rod do you all use for bull reds and small sharks up to 3 feet? I am going to be getting a new one and want one that is a whole lot of fun fighting fish. Do you think an 11' medium action rod would be too soft? I currently have an XH power and the rod barely bends with anything, although I have yet to hook into a large shark.

Check Breakaway LDX or the newer one if you like softer action. Ticas, Penn Prevails ( I think Roy's may have both of those ).

All would be fine. I am partial to Breakaway still tossing the old 11'9 and 10'6".

Keep in mind how much weight you will have at the end of your line when choosing, since you will likely be giving it a strong heave, often using a large chunk of bait and heavy sinker. For the surf, I would choose a rod that will handle a "lure wt" of at least 4 oz, so that will narrow down the selection. There are a few surf rods in medium that will fit that bill, but most are going to be med heavy or heavy.

The medium power rod I am looking says lure weight is 1-4 oz. The meduim heavy will go to 8 oz. I am just wondering how much stiffer the M/H power will be. I am hoping it will be no where near as stiff as my Extra Heavy rod I have now.

Shallowsport is absolutely correct. Go see nick at Breakaway and if you happen to have shoulder issue he probably has advice to make casting more comfortable.
I have shoulder issue that limits my ability to fly cast for big game fish but I now have a 13 ft LDX that is a a joy to cast.

I have a 12 ft Prevail medium-heavy that I love. I've caught sharks and Cobia up to five feet on it with no problem. As a side note I got it brand new at a flea market in Mission Texas for $35.
