Came across this and it shows just how bad (and how quickly) things can go bad when coming into a pass with strong following seas.

Shocked Shocked

yup, should have blasted through there a lot faster...

NOT using the throttle can get you in just as much trouble as using it too much...

I believe that is Jupiter Inlet in FL. Read the story about the surfer paddling over to pull the boater out of the water.

More throttle definitely needed in this situation.

You're darn tootin! Combine bad throttle control with bad surfing skills and a problem can come up FAST! Shocked There are also times when coming in with such conditions that one can't just go straight ahead, if there's another big peak there. That, I would call "driving off the front bumper", instead of looking and thinking ahead of trouble. Wink

He also came thru in a larger set of waves. Those just behind were much smaller. Like I said.... bad (nonexistent?) surfing skills.....

Been there almost done that. I have also found that in addition to power and speed you need to keep the motor trimmed out in those circumstances so as to help keep the bow up.

There is something weird about that whole thing, the boat just does not look right at all.

We all were thinking that he either had water in the hull or the fishboxes up front were full. Combining that with full down motor trim led to a bad day.

That boat does look loaded down. This made me remember I had a dream last night I forgot to put the plug in and sank my boat. I guess that would be considered a nightmare.

This reminds me of being west bound one day on Baffin Bay when the wind was very strong. If you haven't experienced it on Baffin, it will get your attention.

Boat was damaged and had taken on a bunch of water prior to trying to come back through the inlet, you can see how low is was sitting in the water.

Lots of water in a hull is dangerous in more ways than some folks think. In this situation, the stern lifting and then the boat decelerating as it hits the wave in front will cause said liquid ballast to rush forward, turning an already dicey situation into a real snowball, really fast! Shocked

All that being said, if the guy had waited to move thru between wave sets, I think that he most likely would have made it.
