In order to open up more days for rec anglers, this season no less!!! - there is a rapidly moving proposal where each State has to toe the Federal line when it comes to State water fishing.
Here is the salient quote "..if Gulf states can agree on a season framework that would align additional federal red snapper days with fishing days in state waters. Closure or removal of current state water open fishing days will be required by each Gulf state in order to receive additional days where both state and federal waters will be open".
In a nutshell, State waters would only be open for weekends, and then zilch for the rest of the year past September. [Don't get me started on the differences in State vs Fed size limits or bags, my duct tape quotient has been exceeded for my noggin for this week]. |

I saw that...it was a proposal by LDWF, and some of the other states are looking at signing on....I wouldn't expect it to get much traction in Florida, where they are enjoying the benefits of TX getting punished PLUS their State water season....and I SURE wouldn't expect TX to give that the time of day....
slippery slope indeed!

I'm hoping that's the case ^^, as Becky points out. Our side of the Gulf has it for public input early next week, and the final decision set for June 16th. At least for me, this is a no-win situation for Texas.
Please don't lets this be one of those quick-to-regret, Vegas backroom weddings, when you wake up with a prosthetic leg next to you in bed the next day, wondering 'What the H&LL just HAPPENED'???? |

OH BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!!!!
The Gulf Council just announced that the amendment 28 overturning (by commercial fishermen lawsuit, nonetheless) will revert the 2.5% from the private recs back to the commercial fishermen....
WHAT AMAZING TIMING!!!!! three days after the private recs shut down, and they're trying to find ways to get more days, the GC moves at the speed of lightening very suddenly, and makes that announcement....
would it surprise anyone to think that the private recs just now exceeded our quota by 2.5% for this year?
ZERO DAY FEDERAL SNAPPER SEASON 2018-2019

Yea, I thought the announcement of the rescinding of Amendment 28 was almost Karma - run along now, catch your 3 days worth, and now, after-the-fact, we are going to move the number, almost guaranteeing the accountability measures kick in next year.

I'll see your ZERO days season, and raise you a 'Restocking Requirement".
Next year, every vessel will be forced to release at least 1 viable THE red snapper for every customer each time they venture outside of State waters!!!!! |

dude.....that's what I'm saying....the timing CAN NOT be coincidence; this was another poke in the eye....the NOAA folks are getting vindictive, like a scorned 13 year-old girl who gets dumped...
we need to dump them, for sure...this relationship just isn't working out, I'm afraid...

no kidding, right? and you would think that we would get some kind of credit for reefing in federal waters, but NOOOOOO.....dinged even harder...
it's pretty easy to tell that they just don't want even one recreational fisherman on the water pulling anything in....that attitude needs to either be changed, or needs to go...

Don't be fooled Texas. They will give you 29 or 37 days this time 1/2 that next year and so on and so on till we get 3 days to fish for THE RED SNAPPER in STATE and fed waters. Tell them to go F themselves and keep building reefs inside 9 miles. Pretty soon all the snappa gonna move here cause we got all the structure. Remember O's Dept of the Interior done removed all the offshore rigs over the last 8 years. _________________ Live like you're dying |

Yeah supposedly it was "decided before the season" but they just decided to drop it now...
Also, if we concede any state water fishing, we'll never ever see it again. _________________ I'd rather be fishing |

2 words guys
Public Hearing !!!!
They have to take and record your comments. Be respectful, be direct, but most importantly, be there to show that this is a BAD deal for the State. Austin, who is ultimately going to make the decision (TPWD Commissioners) don't get out on the Gulf much and can be swayed by 'data' presented to them.
If you remember the Shrimp Wars from days of past, it's nearly battle time again. |

I agree.
Take time to read the statement from TPWD made only a few days ago. Focus on the last paragraph.

I don't care if it pits people against each other, I'm going to say it again.
if THE red snappers are in trouble, then end commercial fishing for them. not slow it down, shuffle the numbers around. end it. you're all done, bandit boys.
lbs is irrelevant. a commercial boat will park over a rock, or a wreck, or other structure and catch the snappers, until there are no more snappers on that wreck. they don't move around looking for quality fish, they rape the resource. That's their job, catch as many fish as possible, spending as little money to do it.
a group of recreational fishermen will catch 2 fish a person over a wreck. 8 fish? 12 maybe? big deal.
the problem IS IN FACT commercial fishing. practically every species of sport fish that is in trouble is a "highly sought after" commercial species. |
