| Although I'm guilty of fishing alone, and find it rewarding, I want to remind all of us it's not without it's perils. Following is the obituary of a young man from Austin and Rockport, who lost his life this past week in Copano Bay by the name of Kevin Farrell, a professional electrician, family man, sportsman, and a friend:http://charliemarshallfuneralhomes.com/kevin-farrell/ |

| There have been no public reports at this time, only speculation. Evidently, he was found without a pfd on, and it seems there was an autopsy being preformed. |

A friend of mine lives near his home and knew him. He said they believe it was a medical issue. Maybe a heart attack or stroke. |

I hated to see that. I do think it is a lot safer to fish with someone especially now that I am in my 50's when old guy stuff happens
Remember though how Rabbit aka Paul Hare would fish that yellow rig off the five mile area on PINS alone in his kayak in the winter at 70? _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

Been fishing by myself for years. The wife gets REALLY ticked about that these days. Offshore especially.
When I was little I would go wade fishing with my grandfather along the JFK causeway. Not to actually fish, but someone was needed as a witness |

He was a friend of a friend of mine that lives in Austin. My wife won't let go alone anymore. I used to fish by myself all the time. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

I told him all the time he was crazy for doing that. But he loved it. |

| With all due respect to his family and I am sure they are hurting, but the guy died doing what we all love. Beats hell out of dying in pain, laying in a hospital bed. |

| Last time fishing with my buddy I asked him what he had hanging around his neck. "It's my whistle," he said. "You hear this, I need your help." |

| that's a very tragic situation. as I get older, I'm a little more careful. I always wear a kill switch, and if I go offshore by myself I wear a inflatable PFD. I don't think I'll stop fishing solo anytime soon. it's a lot cheaper than a head shrink. |

Ditto that. I'm 62.5, and bowhunt/fish alone. Always have a charged cell phone, and think harder and longer about doing this or that, but still do it. _________________ Dave

The story behind this discussion is tragic and I've been reluctant to open up. I have always cherished time on the water...alone.
I've asked myself while out there, "what am I doing all alone?" Well, it comes down to just enjoying every minute of it. Just "don't have to, to anybody" if you understand what that means. A chance to decompress from 21st century. Whatever.
Man, I go the distance and try to go farther each time if I can. I am mesmerized by simple things. Cloud formations, yes. How close can I drift to that Osprey settled on a post. Casting to iridescence in the water past midnight. A coyote on the shore. I even watched a funnel cloud touch down inland guessing if I'll be alright - okay that one isn't exactly simple. But, watching a red swim by within a rods length undisturbed is. Playing with a blue crab hold his own against a me. Just blending into the environment. Sunsets, sunrises, ripples on the water.
And...CATCHING FISH!
God Bless to all of you for contributing to this site. I'll be fine. |
